State Bank of India the country’s largest bank has tied up with online classifieds portal, to conduct joint marketing activites and help rejuvenate the real estate sector. To kick start the MOU, SBI and Magicbricks are launching the 'Seal the Deal' campaign. Under Seal The Deal, SBI and Magicbricks will be hosting a mega online property show for SBI Approved Projects. This will be the first housing carnival in the industry at this scale.  

Mother Dairy launches Aadhar-enabled payment system at booths

To promote cash less transactions, Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Pvt Ltd has introduced Aadhar enabled payment system in more than 1,000 milk booths and ‘Safal’ retail stores. This service would now be available in addition to the existing modes like E-wallets and SmartChange Cards

Anil Baijal Takes Oath As Delhi Lt Governor

Former bureaucrat Anil Baijal has taken oath as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on 31 December 2016. Anil Baijal is a retired Indian Administrative Service officer and is the 21st Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. His appointment came after Najeeb Jung's sudden resignation from the post. 

Maharashtra sanctions Rs 2 crore for district-level sports complexes

Maharashtra government has sanctioned disbursement of two crore rupees for the district-level sports complexes for which Sports training department of every district will be disbursing the funds. Education and sports department issued a government resolution for sanctioned amount would be the same is Rs 5.06 crore, out of which 1.95 crore rupees had been sanctioned for disbursement.

RBI extends period of enhanced Prepaid Payment Instruments limit

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has extended the period of enhanced Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPI) limit of Rs 20,000 as part of efforts to promote digital payments. Keeping in view that Bank is undertaking a comprehensive review of the guidelines and framework for PPI issuance in the country, it has been decided to extend the measures till the completion of review of the PPI guidelines. 

Romania's president appoints Sorin Grindeanu as PM

Romania's president Klaus Iohannis has appointed Sorin Grindeanu as the country's new prime minister. Grindeanu proposed for the position by a government coalition comprising election winners Social Democrat Party (PSD) and junior partner Liberal-Democrat Alliance (ALDE). The president signed the decree of Grindeanu's appointment.

Narinder Batra resign's as IOA associate VP

Senior functionary Narinder Batra has resigned as the associate vice-president of the Indian Olympic Association as a mark of protest against the IOA for not taking back its decision to appoint scam-tainted Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay Singh Chautala as honorary life presidents.Strongly expressing his reservations over the appointments, Batra, who recently became the International Hockey Federation (FIH) president was strongly against the backdoor entry of Kalmadi and Chautala in the IOA.

World's highest bridge opens in China

The world's highest bridge has opened in China, connecting two provinces in the mountainous southwest and reducing travel times by as much as three-quarters, local authorities .The Beipanjiang Bridge soars 565 metres (1,854 feet) above a river and connects the two mountainous provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou.

India Today poll: Virat Kohli voted India's Sportsperson of 2016

Test captain Virat Kohli has emerged as the India's Sportsperson of the Year 2016 in a poll conducted by India . Kohli, with 44.18% votes, pipped badminton ace PV Sindhu (31.51%) for the top spot while star all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin came third with 13.83% of the votes.Even though Kohli won the poll this year, all the six sportspersons who were a part of this poll were winners in their own rights.

PM launches Mobile App-BHIM for Aadhaar-based digital payment

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a mobile app Bharat Interface for Money, BHIM to facilitate digital cash transactions with only a thumb print after the bank account is linked with Aadhaar gateway. Addressing Digi Dhan Mela at Talkatora stadium in New Delhi, Mr Modi said, payments through the new system can be made by just a thumb impression.

India, Singapore sign 3rd protocol for amending DTAA

India and Singapore have amended the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) for the avoidance of double taxation and prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income, by signing a Third Protocol on 30th December 2016.

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has expelled his son and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav for six years for alleged anti-party activities, putting the state ruling party on the brink of a split ahead of assembly elections next year. Also expelled for six years on the same grounds is the patriarch's cousin Ram Gopal Yadav, a Rajya Sabha member. 

Cash withdrawal limit from ATMs increased to Rs 4,500 per day

In a major relief for the common man, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has increased the daily limit of ATM withdrawal to Rs 4500 from current Rs 2500 with effective from January 1st, 2017.

China, Nepal to conduct first ever joint military drill

Nepal and China will hold their first ever joint military exercise early 2017. China and Nepal had been in 'initial communication' on the military exercise, and that the details would be released in due course of time.Although Nepal has been holding joint military exercises with other countries, including India and the United States, this is the first time Nepali military would be holding such an exercise with China. 

China's Alibaba to open first India office in Mumbai

Chinese e-retail giant Alibaba, which has made investments in India's Snapdeal and Paytm, is setting up its first office in India in Mumbai. The office will be located at the commercial Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. Alibaba Group Holding Limited is a Chinese e-commerce company that provides consumer-to-consumer, business-to-consumer and business-to-business sales services via web portals.

Suresh Kalmadi chose to back off but Abhay Singh Chautala remained defiant even as the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) member. Suresh Kalmadi has refused to accept the post of life president with the Indian Olympic Association following a notice from the Sports Ministry to the IOA.

Cabinet approves ordinance to make possession of old notes penal offence

The Cabinet has approved promulgation of an Ordinance to make possession of a large number of scrapped banknotes a penal offence making holding of old 1,000 and 500 rupee notes after March 31st 2017 beyond a threshold amount a criminal offence.The possession will attract a monetary fine of 10,000 rupees or five times the cash held, whichever is higher.

Govt launches Swachh Swasth Sarvatra initiative

Government of India launched Swachh Swasth Sarvatra initiative, aiming at strengthening health centres in open defecation-free blocks. Launching this initiative in New Delhi, Health Ministry J P Nadda stated that the objective of this initiative is to strengthen community health centres in 708 Open Defecation free blocks across the country to enable them to achieve higher levels of cleanliness and hygiene. 

SP Vaid appointed as new J&K police chief

The Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet has cleared the appointment of 1986 batch IPS officer Dr Shesh Pal Vaid, Special DG, Coordination and Law and Order, as new Director General of Police. He will succeed DGP K Rajendra, whose extended term of service ends on 31 December 2016. 

Meghalaya to host National Games 2022

After successfully co-hosting the 12th South Asian Games with Assam early in 2016, Meghalaya has now got the opportunity to hold the National Games 2022 with its 50 years of statehood. Meghalaya clinched the bid for hosting the prestigious 2022 national games in the state overshadowing four other bidders Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Chhattisgargh and Uttarakhand. It also pledged Rs 5 crore as the bid amount for the game.

Centre approves Rs 266 crore investment for Delhi under AMRUT

The Central Govt of India has approved investments of Rs266 crore rupees for improving water supply and sewerage networks in Delhi. With the approval, the Urban Development Ministry has now given nod to a total investment of Rs489 crore rupees for improving urban infrastructure in the national capital under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) guidelines. 

Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher passes away at 60

Actress Carrie Fisher, known for playing Princess Leia in the 'Star Wars' film series, passed away at the age of 60 in a Los Angeles hospital due to a heart attack. Carrie Frances Fisher was an American actress, writer, producer, and humorist.

Former IAS officer Anil Baijal to be next Delhi Lt Governor

Anil Baijal has replaced Najeeb Jung as the next Delhi Lt Governor. Baijal, a 1969-batch IAS officer, served as home secretary in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Delhi's former Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung had resigned on December 22 2016, 18 months before the end of his tenure.

South Indian Bank has introduced a full-fledged NRI-focused mobile banking application called SIB Mirror+ across major mobile platforms. The new app was launched after the path-breaking 'E-Lock' feature that provided a single tap solution to fully secure all digital transaction from frauds. SIB Mirror+ equips the customers to perform almost all banking transactions from their smart phones.

Haryana Government to set up country’s first Caterpillar Train

Haryana Government has decided to set up a pilot corridor for an innovative concept of 'Caterpillar Train' that will fly over city’s traffic, in Gurgaon city. The concept of Caterpillar Train, also known as C-Train, was co-developed by an Indian Railways engineer Ashwani Kumar Upadhyaya along with Emil Jacob, both PhD  Caterpillar Trainscholars at MIT, for which they won a global award at the MIT in the United States earlier in 2016 for this innovative idea. 

India Signs Agreement with Bhutan for green and sustainable construction

India has signed an agreement with Bhutan for assistance in green and sustainable construction of infrastructure in the Himalayan kingdom. The MoU was signed between Central Public Works Department (CPWD), under India’s Ministry of Urban Development and the Department of Engineering Services, under Bhutan’s Ministry of Works and Human Settlements.

Indian Army partners with IIT Gandhinagar for critical technology requirements

Indian Army has inked an agreement with IIT Gandhinagar to set up a research and development (R&D) cell at the IIT campus to identify problems and possible solutions for the Indian Army. The agreement also enable the IIT and Indian Army to collaborate in areas including critical technology requirements of Indian Army, sharing of professional and technical knowledge. 

Virat Kohli chosen as captain of Cricket Australia’s ODI team of the year

Accolades continue to pour in for India’s dynamic Test captain Virat Kohli, has named skipper of Cricket Australia’s ODI team of the year which also featured young yorker specialist Jasprit Bumrah.  Kohli, who was earlier also picked captain of the ICC’s ODI team of the year, was preferred over Australia’s Steve Smith. Smith was, however, picked in the ‘All-Star’ team.

RBI allows FPIs to invest directly in NCDs/bonds issued by Indian cos

The Reserve Bank of India has allowed foreign portfolio investors (FPI) to transact in non-convertible debentures/bonds issued by Indian companies either directly or in any manner as per the prevalent/approved market practice.The central bank notified that this move is aimed providing flexibility in regard to the manner in which such instruments issued by Indian companies can be acquired by FPIs.

PM Modi lays foundation stone of 900 km Char Dham highway

PM Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone of Char Dham highway development project in Dehradun.  Char Dham Yatra is an annual pilgrimage to the shrines of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. The project includes developing 900 km of National Highways in Uttarakhand at Rs  12,000 crore. The Char Dham project is a tribute to those who lost their lives during Uttarakhand flash floods.

Viral Acharya appointed as deputy governor of RBI

Viral Acharya has appointed by the Government of India as the deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He will be joining the ranks of Vishwanathan, S S Mundra, R Gandhi as one of four deputy governors serving under RBI Governor Urjit Patel. Mundra and Gandhi had served under former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan, while Vishwanathan was appointed during Urjit Patel’s tenure.
