Noted Kannada writer D Javare Gowda passes away


Noted Kannada writer D. Javare Gowda has passed away following a cardiac arrest in Mysuru. He was 101 year old. He was popularly known as 'De Ja Gow' in literary circles. He has served the Mysore University from 1969 to 1975 as Vice-Chancellor. He dedicated much of his time and efforts towards protecting Kannada and promoting the language as the medium of instruction in schools. 

NGT imposes Rs.50 lakh fine On East Coast Railway


The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a fine of  50 lakh on East Coast Railway for operating an illegal railway siding without the consent of the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) at Jakhapura railway station near Kalinganagar in Odisha’s Jajpur district.

ONGC Videsh signs pact with SOCAR trading


ONGC Videsh Ltd (OVL), the overseas arm of state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) has signed a pact with the trading arm of Azerbaijan's state energy company SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic) to foray into oil trading. To begin with, OVL's share of oil from the Azeri, Chirag and Guneshli (ACG) group of fields in Azerbaijan will be traded through the new venture. BP-operated Azeri-Chirag-Deepwater Guneshli (ACG) field is located about 100 km east of Baku and is the largest oilfield in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian basin.

NASA successfully Deploys BEAM, First Inflatable Room Attached To International Space Station



United states (US) space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has successfully deployed the first experimental inflatable room attached to the International Space Station (ISS). The experimental inflatable room dubbed as BEAM (Bigelow Expandable Activity Module) was deployed after it was successfully expanded and pressurized. 

Former Lok Sabha MP Rudra Madhab Ray passes away


Former Lok Sabha MP from Odisha and senior BJP leader Rudra Madhab Ray has passed away at a hospital in Bhubaneswar. He was suffering from Kidney related problems from past couple of month. He was 80 year old. He was elected to the Odisha Assembly three times from Daspalla constituency from 1990 to 1995, 1995 to 1997 and again from 2004 to 2009.

RIL sells stake in African oil retailer GAPCO


Reliance Industries, a conglomerate holding company headquartered in Mumbai has sold its stake in African fuel retailer Gulf Africa Petroleum Corporation (GAPCO) to Total S. A. of France for an undisclosed sum. With this sell, Total S. A. has become the care taker of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania's GAPCO business. Total S.A., a French multinational integrated oil and gas company is a leading retailer of petroleum products in Africa. 

Mahindra & Mahindra inks brand licence deal with Pininfarina


Mahindra & Mahindra has stated that it has signed a brand licence agreement with Italian car designer Pininfarina for using trademarks after closing the deal to acquire 76.06 per cent stake in the Turin-based companyLast year Mahindra group had announced to acquire Pininfarina for an overall outgo of over 50 million Euros (nearly Rs 370 crore) after months of negotiations.

The PEC University of Technology of Chandigarh and Union Ministry of Railways have signed an MoU for setting up of Kalpana Chawla Chair on Geospatial Technology for Indian Railways at the University. The MoU was signed in the backdrop of Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu’s Budget announcement in this regard. The academic chair is being instituted in memory of Indo–American Astronaut and Alumnus of PEC Late Kalpana Chawla. She was the first woman of Indian origin in space.

Alastair Cook Becomes Youngest Cricketer To Score 10000 Test Runs



England captain Alastair Cook has become the youngest ever batsman to cross 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Cook, who is 31 years and five months old, beat Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar's record, who was 31 years and 10 months old when he crossed 10,000 runs. Cook achieved the landmark on Day 4 of the second Test against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street. He is also the first Englishman to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket.

Second submarine assembly workshop of the Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) has been inaugurated by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. Presently, MDL is building six Scorpene class of submarines for the Indian Navy, with around 35% of indigenisation. Trial Run Of High-Speed Spanish Talgo Train Conducted In India


The Indian Railways has conducted the first trial run of Spanish train Talgo between Bareilly and Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh as part of its strategy to increase the speed of trains. Nine Talgo coaches were hauled by a 4,500 HP diesel engine for a trial run from Bareilly at 8.50 am at a speed ranging between 80-115 km per hour, a senior Railway Ministry official involved with the Talgo train

India and Australia have signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance research and development capabilities in biotechnology by launching a joint funding callThe MoU was signed between India’s BIRAC (Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council) and Horticulture Innovation Australia (HIA). Nalco pulls out of JV with NPCIL for nuclear power plant in Gujarat


Aluminium giant National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO) has decided to end its joint venture with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) for nuclear power plant in Gujarat. Both the companies have signed an MoU in 2012 to set up two units of Kakrapara Atomic Power Station in Gujarat with capacities of 700 Mw each. The estimated cost of the project was rs 12,000 crore.

In a step to expand its reach and connect with more audience, Government has launched the official website of the Prime Minister’s office(PMO) in 6 regional languages. The new multi-lingual website of PM Modi, www.pmindia.gov.in, can now be accessed in Bengali, Gujarati, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu in addition to English and Hindi. The website was inaugurated by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj at New Delhi.

Government to sell off 14 ITDC hotels


According to the Union tourism and culture minister Mahesh Sharma, 14 out of 16 loss making hotels owned by state-run ITDC will be sold off. For these hotels, the process to privatize them has already started, which will improve the financial health of India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC). He also stated that the finance ministry is taking forward the disinvestment plan to totally offload government's stakes in all the ITDC-run hotels except the Ashoka and Samrat hotels in the national capital.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Win IPL 2016 Season 9 Title


Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) won their maiden IPL 2016 season 9 title after beating Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 8 runs. SRH won the toss and batted first & gave RCB a target of 209 to chase in 20 overs. Indian-American scientist Arnab De wins Springer Theses Award


An Indian-American scientist Arnab De has received the prestigious Springer Theses Award in recognition for his outstanding research in which he developed transgenic mice to study a critical tumour-suppressor called A20. He was nominated by New York’s Columbia University for his PhD thesis. Before this, Mr. De, who has also developed peptide-based prodrugs as therapeutics for diabetes. For this he had received the Young Investigator Award at the American Peptide Symposium.

Vice President of India, Mr. Hamid Ansari is leaving to North African nations of Morocco and Tunisia on a 5 day visit. J&K NCC Girls Scale Mt. Everest



Three NCC girl cadets of NCC Directorate J&K have made the State proud by scaling the Mt Everest. They were part of the first ever all girls Mt. Everest Expedition of the NCC which scaled the summit recently. The three girl cadets from Jammu and Kashmir are Cadets Stanzlin Laskit, Tashi Laskit and Tsering Angmo. All the three girls hail from Leh and are students of Class XII of Government Higher Secondary School, Leh.

Tech Mahindra to acquire UK-based Target Group


IT services and solutions giant, Tech Mahindra is all set to acquire UK based Target Group to strengthen its BFSI portfolio. The transaction is expected to close in  Q2 FY17, subject to the receipt of regulatory approvals. The total value of acquisition is GBP112 million (or $164 million) and an adjustment for surplus cash upto GBP 8 million. Target Group provides BPaaS offerings in the areas of lending and investment products servicing to its clients, on variable pricing models.

Lakshadweep becomes the first Union Territory to sign 24x7 ‘Power for All’ document



Lakshadweep became first Union Territory (UT) to sign “24x7 Power for All” document. A representative of Government of India and the Administration of Lakshadweep signed the document in the presence of P.K. Pujari, Secretary, Ministry of Power. The document chalks out a plan to increase the solar capacity of the region from 2.15 MW to 8.45 MW.
