External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has inaugurated the 1st Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi. Envisioned as India’s flagship conference of geopolitics and geo-economics, the Raisina Dialogue 2016 is designed to explore prospects and opportunities for Asian integration. It is a key to not only India’s development but the entire region and the Asian continent.
The conclave has focused on Asia’s physical, economic, human and digital connectivity. Over 450 delegates from around 40 countries are participating in the three-day conference. The delegates also include former president of Sri Lanka Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and former president of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai.
During opening remarks, ORF Director Sunjoy Joshi thanked the Foreign Minister, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and his team for the support extended to ORF for organizing this Dialogue, India’s first global conclave on geo-economics and geopolitics. He told Swaraj that she is not just inaugurating a conference but is crafting a new mode of how the Indian leadership brings together thought leaders, experts, practitioners and people to successfully engage with the region and the world.
As per officials “the Asian century in effect is really about once again integrating Asia with itself, integrating Asia within itself, and integrating Asia with the world”. The theme of this inaugural edition of the Dialogue is “Connecting Asia” which tries to capture the various facets of these ambitions. The Raisina Dialogue aspires to be one of the arenas, where the old and the new can work together, not always necessarily in agreement, but always in harmony, many times contesting, but contesting as partners and not as adversaries. This dialogue aspires to be such an amphitheater of ideas located in India but owned by the world.
