Afghanistan’s National Women’s Cycling Team Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize

Afghanistan’s national women’s cycling team has been nominated for the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize by Italian Parliament an online campaign. The team has used the bicycle as a vehicle for social justice, enduring violence and social stigma. It is the 1st Afghan women’s team to compete on the international stage, at the Asian Cycling Championships in Delhi in 2013.

The women team is credited with challenging gender barriers in Afghanistan, and are among very few Afghan women team who cycle socially in their country where it is considered taboo. But things are changing, these women have used cycling to promote social justice and social stigma. Whether they realize it or not, they are setting an example for all the women of the world. The Afghan women team bring national pride to themselves and to a war-torn country, they are opening the door to allow girls to ride bicycles for transportation.
Afghanistan also had a women’s team in 1986, but that team was scuttled during Soviet and subsequent Taliban control of the country. And again it was reborn in 2011. The team now has about a dozen women.
