The Zika virus is a mosquito transmitted infection related to dengue, yellow fever and West Nile virus. Although it was discovered in the Zika forest in Uganda in 1947 and is common in Africa and Asia.
Today, more than 22 countries in the Americas have reported the sporadic Zika virus infections, indicating its rapid geographic expansion .
Zika virus is a disease caused by a virus transmitted by Aedes Mosquitoes which can breed in a pool of water as small as a bottle cap and usually bite during the day. About 1 in 5 people infected with Zika virus become ill. People with Zika virus disease usually have a mild fever, skin rash and conjunctivitis. Zika virus usually remains in the blood of an infected person for a few days but it can be found longer in some people.Deaths are rare.The symptoms of Zika are similar to those of dengue and chikungunya, diseases spread through the same mosquitoes that transmit Zika. These symptoms normally last for 2 to 7 days.
The union health ministry of India has also sounded an alert for Zika and has appointed the National Centre For Disease Control ( NCDC) as a nodal agency for investigation of any outbreak of the viral infection in India.
The health ministry has set up a joint monitoring group under the Director General Of Health Services (DGHS) to follow the issue on daily basis.
The world Health Organisation has also announced the Zika Virus an emergency. The WHO has hold an emergency meeting on Zika virus, which is linked to birth defects and spreading explosively trough the Americas and Asian region. The WHO declared Zika virus as a “public health emergency on international concern, “deserving of a coordinated global response”.
Still there is no specific treatment or
vaccine currently available. The best form of prevention is protection against
mosquito bites. So be protective and be healthy.
