Australia Won 2016 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup By Defeating India


Australia has won the 25th edition of Sultan Azlan Shah Cup by defeating India in the final held in Ipoh, Malaysia. Australia notched up a thumping 4-0 victory over India. This was the 9th title for Australia at this tournament. The country has last won it in the year 2014.

Apart from Australia, India has last won this tournament in the year 2010. That was the fifth title of India in which India was jointly declared winners with South Korea. 

The Australian team took off though Craig’s field goals in the 25th and 35th minutes. Gohdes made it 3-0 in the 43rd minute and scored the fourth in the 57th minute. The result meant Australia lifted the trophy with an all-win record.

The New Zealand team who was the winner of 2015 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup has acquired the third place in the 25th edition of the tournament.

The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup is an annual international men’s field hockey tournament held in Malaysia. It has began in 1983 as a biennial contest. The tournament has became an annual event after 1998, following its growth and popularity. The tournament is named after the ninth Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) of Malaysia, Sultan Azlan Shah, who was an avid fan of field hockey.
