The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the appointment of Mr. Rahul Johri as its first-ever chief executive officer (CEO). He will join the board on 1st of June.
Prior to this appointment he was working with Discovery Networks as Asia Pacific’s Executive Vice-President and General Manager for South Asia for around 15 years. Mr. Johri will report to the BCCI secretary. The BCCI has appointed Mr. Johri after rigorously scanning candidates through a professional head-hunting agency.
In 2005, when Mr. Sharad Pawar has taken over the charge of BCCI chief for the first time, he has recommended the appointment of a CEO. But at that time BCCI rulebook handed all the powers of a chief executive to the secretary. So the proposal wasn’t approved and Ratnakar Shetty was appointed as the chief administrative officer.
The creation of the CEO post was among the key recommendations of the 3 member RM Lodha committee. The committee was appointed by the Supreme Court to suggest administrative reforms in Indian cricket. BCCI secretary Mr. Anurag Thakur stated on Mr. Johri’s appointment that Mr. Johri’s appointment would help to strengthen the working of the board.
