The incumbent Chief Minister of Manipur Okram Ibobi Singh
resigned from the post giving way for formation of a new ministry under the BJP.
This is the first time the BJP has come to power in the north-eastern state.
The Congress leader Okram Ibobi announced to resign after BJP named Nongthombam Biren Singh as the party’s leader to form the government with majority win.
The BJP’s Nongthombam Biren Singh will take oath as Manipur’s next chief minister on 15th March 2017 along with his council of ministers in the presence of BJP president Amit Shah and Union Minister Jitendra Singh.
BJP has the support of four MLAs each from Naga People’s Party (NPP), the National People’s Party (NPP) and one MLA from Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (LJP). BJP has 21 MLAs. T. Robindro Singh of the All India Trinamool Congress along with Congress MLA T. Shyam Kumar too are supporting the BJP-led coalition.
