The Union Cabinet under Chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the spectrum auction plan recommended by the department of telecommunication. The approved auction will have spectrum bands of 700MHz, 800MHz, 900MHz 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz available for sale. This will be the biggest spectrum auction ever for Indian telecom industry and is expected to fetch the government around Rs.5.5 lakh crore. The auction of such a large quantity of spectrum will give a fillip for Digital India programme.
It will also allow telecom operators to purchase spectrum at par with international holding values and end spectrum shortage. This auction for the first time will sell 700 MHz band which is preferred for offering high-speed broadband services. Thus help to increase internet penetration in the country. But there could be a minor delay in the auctions as the Cabinet decided to seek telecom regulator Trai’s opinion on the contentious issue of spectrum usage charge (SUC). The move could result in a delay in the issuance of the notice inviting applications (NIA) for the auctions as Trai is expected to take some time in finalizing its views on the matter.
So let’s discuss some questions related to this post :
1. The Union Cabinet has approved Rs 5.5 lakh crore for the auction plan of what?
2. How much MHz band will be auctioned for the first time?
