Chennai Gets India’s First Self Cleaning Smart Toilets


A total of 183 self cleaning public eToilets have been installed in the Chennai City. Chennai is the 1st city in India to gets smart Toilets. These toilets are free for Public use. Each toilet automatically cleans itself before entry and after use and sensors enable consumption of less water and power with each use. 


An Indian social enterprise, Eram Scientific Solution is the brains behind the project and has already installed over 1,600 eToilets in private buildings and schools across 18 Indian states. In 2012, it even won a grant of $450,000 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Around 40 toilets come equipped with a sanitary napkin generator. In addition, five toilets have been built for the differently abled. Notably, these toilets can be located through an Android app called eToilet. The toilet has a modular, sleek and appealing design and is easy to install and relocate. They are equipped with sensors for exhaust fan and light too. This “smart” toilet also washes the platform by itself after every five or 10 persons use the toilet. An instructional note is pasted outside the toilet to make the user familiar with the functioning of this toilet.

Tamilnadu has also launched the Internet for every home in collaboration with state owned Arasu Cable TV Corporation. In which Each household can get the services of broadband available in various packages, priced between Rs. 299 and Rs. 899 every month, inclusive of service tax. The chief minister also declared open the start-up warehouse of Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV set up at a cost of Rs. 3.53 crore and cloud computing facility at Rs. 10.41 crore.
