Chess Grandmaster Viktor Korchnoi passed away


Chess grandmaster Victor Korchnoi has passed away in Wohlen, Switzerland. He was 85 years old. He is a former Soviet champion who defected to the West and was considered among the best players never to win a world championship. He was a candidate for the World Championship on ten occasions. In September 2006, he won the World Senior Chess Championship.

Viktor Korchnoi was a professional chess grandmaster and author. He was born in Leningrad and learned chess from his father at the age of six. Angry at the Soviet leadership, Korchnoi defected in the Netherlands in 1976 and moved to Switzerland the following year. Korchnoi continued to play into old age, was still ranked in the top 100 in the world at the age of 75 and was Swiss chess champion as recently as 2011.
