India’s ace squash player Joshna Chinappa has won the gold medal in women’s individual category at the 12th South Asian Games (SAG). In the final match played at R G Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati, she defeated Pakistan’s Maria Wazir by 10-12, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7 score.
With this she became first Indian squash player to win individual gold medal in 2016 SAG. In Men’s individual category Nasir Iqbal of Pakistan won the on the gold medal in men’s individual category at the 12th SAG. In the final match, he defeated Farhan Zaman of Pakistan by 14-12, 11-7, 11-9 score.
Joshna, ranked 14th in the world, faced a robust challenge from Maria, ranked 50, in a match that was often reduced to excessive gamesmanship.
The India-Pakistan final enhanced the tension, which seemed to influence the players, forcing chief referee Munir Shah to caution both and urging them to desist from “intentional obstruction and dramatisation of infringements.”
Joshna said about Maria’s excessive aggression, “I play on the PSA tour and most of the girls there play fair and clean. And, that is the kind of game that I like to play. Unfortunately, today was not a nice game to watch. We both want to win but there is a way to win as well”.
