‘Darwaza Band- Part 2’ campaign launched by Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen focuses on sustaining the open defecation free status of villages across the country. Earlier Darwaza Band campaign was launched in 2017. The campaign launched by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation in Mumbai in the presence of actor Amitabh Bachchan.
About Swaccha Bharat Mission in Brief:
The mission was launched in 2nd October 2014. The basic objective of Swaccha Bharat Mission is to provide sanitation facilities to every family, including toilets, solid and liquid waste disposal systems, village cleanliness and safe and adequate drinking water supply by 2nd October 2019.
As per the government data, over 50 crore people stopped defecating in the open since the launch of the Swachh Bharat Mission and with over 5.5 lakh villages have been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) and the national sanitation coverage is now 98% compared to 39% in 2014. Swachh Bharat Mission has two sub-missions:
- Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural) under the ministry of drinking water and sanitation.
- Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) under the ministry of Urban Development.
