The Delhi Metro is set to start a cargo service on its high-speed Airport Express Line from March 1 to transport non-perishable and e-commerce items. In start this services will be implemented on an experimental basis for three months between New Delhi and IGI Airport Metro stations.
It is expected to be a move towards cutting down fuel emissions with fewer cargo vehicles plying on city roads. This will be the first time ever occasion when a metro system in the country will be used for the transportation of cargo line .DMRC also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a specialised cargo agency for the purpose.
- This would be the first-ever occasion, when a Metro system in India would be used for the transportation of cargo.
- As per an earlier announcement, Delhi Metro stations will double up as terminals for e-commerce sites.
