Former Malian Photographer Malick Sidibe Passed Away


The award winning Malian photographer, Malick Sidibe has passed away recently. He was 80 year old. Sidbe was known for his black and white studio portraits that captured the lives of young Malians in the 1960s and 1970s

Sidibe work has been the subject of publications and been exhibited throughout Europe and in the United States. Critics also said that photos of Mali’s post-colonial period helped people see the West African nation in a new light. His works captures the lives of young men and women, often showing off a prized possession like a watch or a motorbike.

Mr. Sidibe has become the first African winner of the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2007 and also won a Hasselblad Award for photography. Apart from these awards Mr. Sidibe has also won an International Center of Photography Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2008.
