Giving highest priority to road safety, the government is planning to make it mandatory to set aside 1% of the total cost of any highway project for the purpose. This money will be used for road safety issues that include fixing accidental spots, installing cameras, lights and on other such issues.
Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that road accidents cause an annual loss equivalent to three per cent of the GDP. The government is committed to reducing the number of road accidents and fatalities by 50% in next 2 to 3 years.
