Green Delhi Initiative Phase 1 Has Launched By Arvind Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has launched the first phase of the Green Delhi initiative by planting trees at the Triangular Park near ITO Chowk. The initiative was launched in reference to action plan submitted by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to the Supreme Court after it demanded information on steps being taken to improve air quality and reduce air pollution in the Capital.

The CM, who had decided that roads under the PWD would be vacuum cleaned in a phased manner beginning April 1, announced that the central verges of the 1,260 kms of road maintained by the PWD will be bedded with grass and greenery in order to clean up the environment and make it dust free. The Public Works Department (PWD) also said that the greening will be completed within three months at an estimated cost of Rs. 2 crores.

The exercise will involve the greening of around 120 acres which includes central verges, side verges and the kutcha portion under flyovers. Only treated water, being made available by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), will be utilised as part of the initiative.

Pollution absorbing shrubs such as Thevetianerefolia (Pila Kaner), Nerium oleander (Lal Kaner), Calliandrabrevipes (Powder puff) and Bougainvilleas and trees such a Ficusinfectoria (Pilkhan), Cassia Siamea will be planted.

The next phase of this initiative will cover other areas which are not covered in 1st phase. The 2nd phase of Green Delhi initiative will begin in July and will be completed by September, 2016.
