Indian Navy to grant permanent commission to women, allow lady officers aboard warships

Breaking the gender barrier, seven women officers of Short Service Commission batch of 2008-09 have been granted  permanent commission by Indian Navy.Navy is the last of the three wings of the armed forces in the country to allow permanent commission for women.

While the army and air force allow permanent commission for them, the navy had limited women officers only to short service commission of 14 years. The Navy will also allow woman officers to join as pilots of maritime patrol aircraft like P-8Is, IL-38s, and Dorniers from next year onwards. But the force is yet to finalize a policy for allowing woman officers on board sea-faring warships.

There are currently only about 340 woman officers who have been granted permanent commission in select branches of the Army and IAF, even though they have been allowed to join the three Services since the early-1990s as SSC  officers for a maximum tenure of 14-15 years. Overall, women number just 1,436 in the Army, 1,331 in IAF and 532 in Navy.

As earlier reported, the IAF has only now begun to train three woman officers as fighter pilots on an experimental basis. But the Army still has no plans to induct them into the fighting arms of infantry, armoured corps and artillery, which involve direct ground combat with enemy forces.
