Internal security chief Tran Dai Quang sworn in as Vietnam’s president

Internal security chief Tran Dai Quang was sworn as the new Vietnamese president, concluding a five-yearly transfer of power within the ruling Communist Party. Mr. Tran Dai was the only candidate for president and received all but five of the 465 votes cast by members of the National Assembly. He will next month host Barack Obama, in the first visit by a US president to Vietnam in a decade.

One of President Quang’s first duties will be to receive his US counterpart Barack Obama, as Hanoi seeks closer ties with its former wartime adversary in the face of Beijing’s rising assertiveness within the contested South China Sea.
