India ranked 118th out of 156 countries on the United Nations World Happiness Index (WHI) 2016. It was revealed by the fourth World Happiness Report 2016 and published by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), a global initiative for the UN. In 2015 India was at 117 th in the happiness list.
According to the report 2016, Denmark takes the top spot as the happiest country in the world. It has replaced Switzerland. Rwanda, Benin, Afghanistan, Togo, Syria and Burundi were the least happy countries this year. India comes below nations like Somalia (76), China (83), Pakistan (92), Iran (105), Palestinian Territories (108) and Bangladesh (110). The US is ranked 13th, coming behind Australia (9) and Israel (11).
Top 10 countries in the WHI report 2016 are Denmark (1st), Switzerland (2nd), Iceland (3rd), Norway (4th) and Finland (5th), Canada (6th), Netherlands (7th), New Zealand (8th), Australia (9th) and Sweden (10th). Top ten countries have strong social security systems.
The report takes into account GDP per capita, life expectancy, social support and freedom to make life choices as indicators of happiness. For the first time, it emphasizes a special role for the measurement and consequences of inequality in the distribution of well-being.
Happiness Report The report aims at influencing government policy and is prepared based upon study undertaken by Gallup World Poll. The World Happiness Index ranks nations based upon score of different variables on a scale running from 0 to 10.
