11th Ayurveda Day 2026: Theme, Significance and India’s Growing Ayush Ecosystem
India will observe the 11th Ayurveda Day on September 23, 2026, celebrating the country’s more than 5,000-year-old system of traditional medicine and its increasing integration with modern healthcare. The theme for Ayurveda Day 2026 is “Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow” (स्वस्थ भविष्य के लिए आयुर्वेद).
The 2026 observance highlights the expansion of Ayurveda through public healthcare infrastructure, scientific research, education, health insurance, telemedicine, international partnerships and stronger standards for medicines.

The government now marks September 23 annually as Ayurveda Day, aligning the observance with the autumnal equinox, symbolising the principle of balance associated with Ayurveda.
Ayurveda literally derives from “Ayu” meaning life and “Veda” meaning science. Its origins can be traced to the Rigveda, while classical Ayurvedic knowledge is also described in texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita.
Ayurveda views health as a balance involving the doshas, agni, dhatus and malas, together with the mind, senses and overall well-being of an individual.
The government is expanding Ayurveda and other Ayush services through the National Ayush Mission (NAM) and National Health Mission (NHM).
Between 2014-15 and 2025-26, the Centre released more than ₹6,406.99 crore to States and Union Territories under NAM.
As of September 19, 2026, India had 12,260 functional Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (Ayush) against a target of 12,500. Ayush services are also available alongside conventional healthcare at 13,249 public health facilities across India.
These facilities include 6,302 Primary Health Centres, 3,191 Community Health Centres, 475 District Hospitals and 3,281 other health facilities. The government also supports salaries for 25,322 Ayush doctors and 5,666 Ayush paramedics.
Ayush services have also been integrated into the government’s eSanjeevani telemedicine platform.
The platform has served more than 50 crore patients and includes Ayush OPD services, enabling people to consult Ayurveda and other Ayush doctors virtually.
Another major development has been the expansion of insurance coverage for Ayush treatments.
In 2024, IRDAI mandated insurers to offer products or add-ons covering different systems of medicine, including Ayurveda, subject to their Board-approved underwriting policies.
On February 10, 2026, the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi, signed a Common Empanelment MoU with the General Insurance Council. This empanelled AIIA with all 32 general insurance companies in India for cashless treatment—the first such universal empanelment agreement involving an Ayush institution.
Ayurveda has also gained greater international standardisation through its inclusion in the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision (ICD-11) module.
This enables clinicians to record Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani (ASU) diagnoses using standardised codes. It can also facilitate research, policymaking and processing of insurance claims for Ayush treatments.

Under the National Ayush Mission, 17 Ayush colleges have been approved, of which 12 focus on Ayurvedic education.
The AYURGYAN Scheme, launched in 2021-22, supports research and development in traditional medicine.
Of ₹17.79 crore allocated across 34 research projects, Ayurveda accounted for ₹9.38 crore across 17 projects. The government’s research initiatives have also contributed to 33 Ayurveda-specific research publications between 2014-15 and 2025-26.
The Studentship Programme for Ayurveda Research Ken (SPARK) aims to develop research aptitude among undergraduate Ayurveda students by supporting short-term research projects.
Between 2022-23 and 2024-25, 289 Ayurveda colleges benefited from the programme.
In March 2026, the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) partnered with Anuvadini AI, developed by AICTE under the Ministry of Education.
The initiative is translating Ayurveda research, educational material and medical journals into 13 regional Indian languages, expanding access to scientific literature.

India also hosts the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, which serves as an important international research and policy hub for traditional medicine.
The Union Budget 2026-27 allocated ₹4,408 crore to the Ministry of Ayush.
Among the major announcements was the establishment of three new All India Institutes of Ayurveda (AIIA). The Budget also provided for upgrading Ayush pharmacies and Drug Testing Laboratories and strengthening the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre in Jamnagar.
