210 Indian Peacekeepers Receive UN Medal in South Sudan

A total number of 210 Indian peacekeepers who serve in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have been awarded the highly-valued UN Medal for their outstanding service. The ceremony took place in Juba and saw six women peacekeepers and seven staff officers being awarded. The UN underscored the contribution of India’s Blue Helmets in crisis situations, medical emergencies and lifesaving missions. The award highlights the ongoing role of India’s peacekeepers in international peacekeeping missions.

Indian Peacekeepers Honoured in Juba

The UN Mission in South Sudan announced the award on 17th August, Monday, thanking the Indian personnel for their bravery and compassion during the course of their service in such conditions.

The 210 peacekeepers were commended for their contribution to UNMISS, the contingent consisting of,

  • 210 Indian peacekeepers in total
  • 6 women peacekeepers
  • 7 staff officers

According to the UN, the Indian personnel continued to assist in protecting the lives and achieving the peace objectives of the mission despite the crises, medical emergencies and lifesaving operations.

India’s Contribution to UN Peacekeeping

India has an established tradition of participating in UN peacekeeping. At the present time, India is the second largest provider of military and police personnel to UN peace missions.

According to the information available, India provides more than 4,200 military and police personnel, including 155 women, to UN missions all over several regions.

The Indian personnel participate in missions carried out in the countries like,

  • Abyei
  • Central African Republic
  • Cyprus
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Lebanon
  • Middle East
  • Somalia
  • South Sudan
  • Western Sahara

This extensive deployment showcase the India’s continuous involvement in the international efforts to maintain the peace and provide protection to civilians in conflict regions.

India Is Top Troop Contributor to UNMISS

India has a special significance regarding its contribution to UNMISS.

As of April 2026, India was the top contributor of troops to the UN Mission in South Sudan, as there were 1,775 Indian military personnel in the mission.

South Sudan has faced a great number of humanitarian and security challenges, which made the work of peacekeepers vital. Indian personnel play a role in maintaining stability, aiding humanitarian efforts and responding to emergencies.
