3 Major Financial Rule Changes from July 2026: ITR Deadline, Passport Fee Hike & Aadhaar Update
Several important financial and administrative changes come into effect from July 2026 that could directly impact taxpayers, passport applicants, and Aadhaar card holders. From revised passport charges to Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadlines and free Aadhaar email updates, these new rules are expected to affect millions of citizens across India.
While some changes require timely action to avoid penalties, others provide relief by reducing certain service charges. Here are the three major rule changes that you should know from July 2026.
The Income Tax Department has fixed 31 July 2026 as the last date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for most individual taxpayers for the Financial Year 2025–26 (Assessment Year 2026–27).
This deadline applies primarily to salaried individuals, pensioners, and taxpayers having income from salary, one house property, interest, and other simple sources who are not required to get their accounts audited.
Small business owners and professionals filing returns under ITR-3 or ITR-4 have been provided additional time. Their deadline for filing income tax returns has been extended to 31 August 2026.
Taxpayers who fail to file their returns within the prescribed due date may have to pay a late filing fee under the Income Tax Act.
Those who miss the original due date can still file a Belated Income Tax Return until 31 December 2026, subject to applicable late fees and other conditions.
Timely filing is also important to avoid delays in tax refunds and to ensure uninterrupted compliance with tax regulations.
The Ministry of External Affairs has revised passport application charges, with the new fees coming into effect from 1 July 2026.
The increase marks the first major revision in passport charges in nearly 14 years and is intended to cover rising operational costs, improved security features, upgraded technology, and enhanced passport services.
| Passport Service | Earlier Fee | New Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh/Reissue (36 Pages) | ₹1,500 | ₹2,500 |
| Fresh/Reissue (60 Pages) | ₹2,000 | ₹3,500 |
| Tatkaal Passport (36 Pages) | — | ₹5,000 |
| Tatkaal Passport (60 Pages) | — | ₹6,000 |
Applicants planning to apply for a new passport or renew an existing one should consider these revised charges while preparing their applications.
In a relief for Aadhaar card holders, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has waived the ₹75 fee for updating the registered email address through the official Aadhaar mobile application.
Earlier, users had to pay ₹75 for updating their email details. Under the new provision, this fee has been completely waived if the update is carried out digitally through the Aadhaar app.
However, Aadhaar holders should note that this benefit is available only for online updates through the mobile application.
If the update is made by visiting an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or Aadhaar enrolment centre, the prescribed service charges will continue to apply.
The free email update facility will remain available until 31 December 2026.
