76th Shaurya Diwas Celebrates to mark landing of forces in Kashmir

Remembering the 1947 Victory

The Indian Army marked the 76th ‘Shaurya Diwas’ in Jammu and Kashmir, a day dedicated to commemorating a significant historical event, the landing of Indian forces in Kashmir on 27 October 1947. This operation marked the first civil-military victory for Independent India.

A Historic Replication and Honoring Heroes

During the ‘Shaurya Diwas’ celebrations, a striking replication of the historic event was performed as a tribute to the courageous soldiers and the resilient people of Jammu & Kashmir. The event brought together a distinguished audience, including senior Army and Air Force officers, as well as students, who bore witness to a reenactment of history.

Recalling the Significance of October 27, 1947

On October 27, 1947, Indian Army troops landed at Budgam Airport, initiating a mission to evict Pakistani forces from Jammu and Kashmir. This day stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment to the unity and integrity of the nation.

A Salute to Courage and Sacrifice

Speaking on this momentous occasion, Lt General Rajiv Ghai, the GoC (General Officer Commanding) of the 15 Corps, emphasized the historical importance of ‘Shaurya Diwas.’ He highlighted the valor of Major Somnath Sharma, the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra. Despite being wounded, Major Sharma led his company, ultimately saving the Srinagar airfield from the grip of Pakistani tribals. In doing so, he made the supreme sacrifice for the nation.

Paying Tribute to the Heroes

General Ghai also paid heartfelt tributes to other brave souls, including gallantry award winners Brigadier Rajinder Singh and Lieutenant Colonel Dewan Ranjit Rai. These heroes dedicated their lives to protect the nation during a crucial phase in India’s history.

The celebration of ‘Shaurya Diwas’ serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by these valiant individuals and the importance of the events of October 27, 1947, in ensuring that Jammu and Kashmir remains an integral part of India. This annual event not only honors the heroes of the past but also rekindles the spirit of patriotism and unity among the people of India.
