Aadhaar OTP Must for Tatkal Bookings from July 15: Railways Issues New Rules

In a major move to curb malpractices and ensure fair access to Tatkal tickets, the Ministry of Railways has announced that Aadhaar-based OTP authentication will be mandatory for booking Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC website and mobile app starting July 15, 2025. The updated rules also impose time-bound restrictions on agents and bring enhanced transparency to the reservation system.

Why in News?

The Railway Ministry declared the rollout of mandatory Aadhaar OTP authentication for all Tatkal bookings done online. The revised rules will be enforced from July 15, 2025. This move is aimed at reducing bulk bookings, deterring unfair practices, and ensuring genuine passengers benefit from the Tatkal scheme.

New Tatkal Ticket Booking Rules

Aadhaar-based OTP Authentication

  • Mandatory for users booking Tatkal tickets online via the IRCTC website/app.
  • OTP will be sent to the mobile number linked with Aadhaar.

Tatkal Bookings at PRS Counters

  • Similar OTP-based authentication will apply at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters.
  • The OTP will be sent to the mobile number provided during booking.

Restriction on Booking Agents

  • IRCTC-authorised agents will not be allowed to book Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the opening window:
  • AC classes: Blocked from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM.
  • Non-AC classes: Blocked from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM.

Objective of the Move

  • Prevent bulk booking and misuse of the Tatkal quota.
  • Ensure genuine users can access high-demand tickets fairly.
  • Enhance transparency and security through Aadhaar validation.
  • Improve overall passenger convenience and experience.

Implementation & Coordination

Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and IRCTC will,

  • Make technical modifications.
  • Notify Zonal Railways and other stakeholders.
  • Launch awareness campaigns before the new rule comes into effect.
