Early Life and Career

  • Born on September 5, 1933, in Matunga, Bombay.
  • Inspired by duty and patriotism, joined Armed Forces Academy in Dehradun in 1949.
  • Commissioned in the Indian Navy in September 1953 as a communications specialist.

A Legacy of Milestones and Leadership

  • Established Naval Academy in Cochin.
  • Commanded INS Beas during the 1971 India-Pakistan war.
  • Served as Indian Naval Attache in Bonn, West Germany (1973-76).
  • Held positions of Fleet Commander of Eastern Naval Command and commander of Southern and Eastern Naval Commands.
  • Admirable leadership earned him respect and accolades from peers and subordinates.
  • Became the 13th Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) on November 30, 1990.
  • Advocated for gender equality, pioneering the induction of women into the Indian Navy during his tenure.

Life After Retirement

  • After retirement, he settled in Bhaimala, Alibag, Maharashtra, focusing on environmental conservation, organic farming, and social causes alongside his wife, Lalita Ramdas.
  • He upheld constitutional values and secularism, reminding the armed forces of their oath to defend the Indian Constitution. He advocated for duty and responsibility among citizens and leaders alike.
