Ahmedabad Street Food Vendors to Display QR Codes for Hygiene Checks

For the strengthening of the accountability in the city’s street food ecosystem, The Gujarat Information Commission (GIC) has directed the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to make the food food safety information accessible through QR codes displayed at the street food stalls which are located in the city. This initiative enables the consumers to verify the vendor registrations, submit feedback and report the report hygiene concerns instantly.

What Is the New QR Code-Based Food Safety System?

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has developed the digital registration system for the all street food vendors.

Under this new system, every registered vendor receives the unique QR code that must be displayed at their stall.

Customers can scan the code by using a smartphone and access the information related to the vendor’s registration and food safety compliance.

The initiative is designed to improve the transparency while enabling citizens to actively participate to maintaining food hygiene standards.

How Does the QR Code Registration Process Work?

AMC’s digital system follows the structured process,

Registration Steps

  • Vendor scans the AMC-issued QR code.
  • The system will records the vendor’s based on GPS location.
  • Vendor submits the details through an online form.

  • Name
  • Mobile number
  • Business name
  • Address
  • Ward details

The system generates the digital certificate with a unique QR code and vendors must print and display this certificate at their stalls.

Registration Progress Till Date

  • In the Street Food Vendors category total 8,700+ registration are completed.
  • Around 7200+ stalls installed the QR Code Stickers.
  • Out of them total 1,700+ Pani Puri Vendors are registered.

The figures indicate that the widespread adoption of the system among the city’s street food operators.

How Did This Initiative Begin?

This reforms was originated from a single Right to Information (RTI) application.

Timeline of the event

  • In June 2025 the RTI application filed by Kirankumar Nayak
  • In 2025 August second appeal filed before the GIC.
  • And in July 2026 the GIC has issued the transparency directives

The applicant sought the information regarding the public health protocols and citizen services and alleged the insufficient transparency in the existing system.
