Annapurni Subramaniam Wins COSPAR Vikram Sarabhai Medal 2026

Annapurni Subramaniam, an Indian astrophysicist, has received the COSPAR Vikram Sarabhai Medal for the year 2026. With this she has become the first Indian woman scientist to receive recognition and also became fourth Indian overall to win this award. This announcement was made at the 46th COSPAR Scientific Assembly in the Florence, Italy on August 3, 2026. This award has been conferred by the Committee on Space Research and the Indian Space Research Organisation to recognize scientists from developing nations for their contribution to space research.

Historical Milestone For Indian Science

The award conferred on Annapurni Subramaniam is an important landmark achievement for the scientific community in India.

She is the following,

  • The first Indian woman to win the COSPAR Vikram Sarabhai Medal.
  • The fourth Indian scientist to be awarded the prestigious medal.
  • The third woman scientist to get this honour globally.

Who is Annapurni Subramaniam?

Dr. Annapurni Subramaniam is one of the most renowned Indian astrophysicists whose research reflects the field of stellar populations, star clusters, and galaxy evolution.

She is presently holding the following positions,

  • Director, Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bengaluru
  • Director, Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), Bengaluru (in addition to above)

Her work has contributed significantly to our understanding of stellar evolution and the structure of galaxies that are near to us.

About the COSPAR Vikram Sarabhai Medal

The COSPAR Vikram Sarabhai Medal is a distinction that was introduced in the year 1990, in homage to Dr. Vikram Sarabhai who created India’s space program.

The award is conferred jointly by,

  • Committee on Space Research (COSPAR)
  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)

Purpose

  • The purpose of the award is to recognize scientists from third world nations who have made major contributions to space research.

Eligibility

  • In order to qualify, the candidate should have undertaken substantive scientific work primarily in the five-year period preceding the COSPAR Scientific Assembly at which the award is given.

Indian Laureates in the Past

Before the arrival of Annapurni Subramaniam, there were three other Indians who had been able to attain the important award such as,

  • 1996: U. R. Rao
  • 2014: Gurbax Singh Lakhina
  • 2024: Anil Bharadwaj
  • 2026: Annapurni Subramaniam

Her achievement is another addition to India’s glory in international space exploration.
