Aralam Declared Kerala’s First Butterfly Sanctuary
The Kerala government has taken a major step towards biodiversity conservation by giving Aralam a new identity. The Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary in Kannur has now been officially renamed as the Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary. The decision recognises the area’s exceptional butterfly diversity and marks a focused effort to protect fragile habitats while promoting awareness and eco-friendly development.
The Kerala government has officially renamed Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary as the Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary. With this move, Aralam has become Kerala’s first dedicated butterfly sanctuary.
Aralam is known for its rich abundance and diversity of butterflies, supported by dense forests and favourable climatic conditions. Experts observed that the region provides ideal breeding and feeding grounds for several rare and endemic butterfly species. Based on recommendations from the State Board for Wildlife, the government decided to give the sanctuary a focused conservation identity.
The new status highlights the importance of insect conservation, which often receives less attention than larger wildlife. Butterflies act as pollinators and ecological indicators, reflecting forest health. Declaring a butterfly sanctuary will help protect habitats, promote research, encourage eco-tourism, and raise awareness among local communities and visitors about biodiversity conservation.
According to forest officials, the government plans to develop a butterfly village by linking four panchayats—Kelakam, Kanichar, Aralam, and Muzhakunnu. Awareness programmes, conservation activities, and community participation initiatives will be organised to ensure local involvement and sustainable livelihoods linked to conservation efforts.
The Aralam area was officially declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1984 through a Kerala Gazette notification. It holds global ecological importance as it forms part of the Western Ghats, which is recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site. The sanctuary plays a key role in protecting forest ecosystems of northern Kerala.
