Asian Games 2026: What Makes Them Different From the Olympics?

The Asian Games 2026, which is formally known as the Aichi-Nagoya 2026, will see thousands of athletes from all over Asia meet in Japan between September 19 and October 4, 2026. While the Asian Games and the Olympic Games have many similarities, such as having both an opening and closing ceremony, numerous disciplines and gold, silver and bronze medals, the two events differ greatly in terms of scale and meaning.

The Olympics sees athletes from all over the world come together for what is considered the greatest international sporting event in the world. The Asian Games, however, focuses only on the continent of Asia and provides athletes with a unique continental event where they can test themselves against the strongest sporting nations in the continent.

What Are the Asian Games?

The Asian Games are the largest multi-sport competition in Asia. Just like the Olympics, the competition is held every four years and organized by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).

The first Asian Games took place in New Delhi in 1951. The most recent games were hosted in Hangzhou, China, in 2023, after being postponed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The upcoming 2026 version of the Asian Games will be hosted by Japan’s Aichi Prefecture, with Nagoya as the organizing hub. The competition is likely to attract athletes from 45 different countries, making it one of the largest sporting events in Asia.

Difference Between Asian Games and Olympics: The Geographical Reach

The most obvious distinction between the two competitions lies in the geographical reach of each one.

The Olympics are a worldwide sporting competition that brings together athletes from almost all corners of the globe. The Asian Games, on the other hand, are purely a continental contest, with only athletes from nations represented in the Asian sporting community participating in the event.

That doesn’t make the competition any less challenging. Athletes from Asia are among the most accomplished in the world, with such countries as China, Japan and South Korea having traditionally dominated many Olympic and Asian Games disciplines.

Therefore, for India, the Asian Games serve as a platform to compete with the best athletes in their continent and at the same time measure up against major sporting nations.

Various Sports and Events

Another significant difference is the nature of the sports program itself.

The Olympic Games boast an internationally acclaimed sports program that may be modified with each new edition of the event. The Asian Games enjoy greater freedom to include such types of sports that are particularly popular and well-developed in the region.

Aichi-Nagoya 2026 includes 43 sports, 71 disciplines and 469 events.

Cricket is the perfect example of the difference. Despite being widely popular in India and some other Asian countries, cricket is not typically included into the Olympic sports program.

However, cricket will become part of the 2026 Asian Games, which provides Indian sportsmen with another chance to win medals, as well as demonstrates the regional nature of the event.

Hence, the Asian Games can become a platform for sports that are popular in Asia, but are less developed in the Olympics.

Importance of the Asian Games for Indian Sportsmen

The importance of the Asian Games for Indian athletes cannot be overestimated.

The gathering of the best athletes of the entire continent allows them to measure their skills against top competitors. Many Asian countries produce numerous world-class sportsmen in such sports as badminton, athletics, shooting, wrestling and others.

Sometimes the regional nature of the competition can create extra difficulties for athletes, since they face good competitors from countries with a well-developed sports system.

On the other hand, participating in the Asian Games allows them to gain extra confidence and experience before playing in the Olympics and other international events.

More Opportunities for Medals through Sports Programme

Moreover, the expanded sports programme also provides more medal opportunities to the participating nations in Asian Games.

In Aichi-Nagoya 2026, there will be 469 competitions, which mean that there will be around 1,407 medals for countries to earn.

That is the reason why countries have more chances to have bigger medal counts through the Asian Games than Olympic Games. This is because of the expanded programme, which helps more disciplines and events contribute towards country’s medal tally.

For India, it is even more significant due to the fact that it gives the opportunity to earn medals from a wide variety of disciplines rather than a few ones.

Stronger Regional Aspect

While the Olympics have a more global identity, the Asian Games have a stronger regional aspect.

Asia consists of a number of countries with extremely different cultural, economic, political and sporting backgrounds. By bringing all of them together, it creates the competition which is more representative of the entire continent.

Moreover, the Asian Games provide developing countries the opportunity to participate in the competition with established countries.

Asian Games As a Step to the Olympics

For many athletes, participation in the Asian Games might be considered an important step towards further international success.

Having to compete with highly skilled athletes from all over Asia, athletes can gain a lot of useful experience in terms of coping with stress and competing on a high level. This may be used to identify one’s weak spots and improve their performance before moving on to the Olympic arena.

The significance of the event is also expressed through the scale of its participation – already by July more than 17,000 athletes and officials have registered.
