The state of Assam is in mourning as it bids farewell to a prominent political figure, Sarat Barkotoky, a former MLA, and minister who passed away in the early hours of October 30. Barkotoky, known for his unwavering dedication to the Indian National Congress, had a long and distinguished political career, having served as a minister of state in former Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia’s cabinet.
Sarat Barkotoky was born on March 1, 1935, in Mathurapur, Sonari, to his parents, the late Hem Chandra Barkotoky and the late Chandra Probha Barkotoky. From an early age, he displayed a passion for public service and a commitment to the Congress party, which became the cornerstone of his political journey.
Throughout his political career, Sarat Barkotoky remained a steadfast member of the Indian National Congress. His dedication and commitment to the party were evident in his continuous success in Legislative Assembly Elections. He was a popular representative, serving the people of Assam with diligence and a deep sense of responsibility.
Sarat Barkotoky’s political career, although illustrious, faced a setback in the 2016 Legislative Assembly Elections. In that election, he was defeated by BJP candidate Topon Kumar Gogoi by a margin of 24,117 votes. This election marked a turning point in his political journey, as he was one of the ten cabinet ministers who faced electoral defeat.
