Bengaluru to Get India’s First Driverless Metro Train

The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has received the first set of six train coaches for its upcoming driverless metro line, called the Yellow Line. This 18.8 km-long line, connecting RV Road and Bommasandra, will be the first in India to have a driverless train system.

Communication-based Train Control (CBTC) System

The new metro line will use the Communication-based Train Control (CBTC) system, which is a modern radio communication system that provides timely and accurate train control information. The CBTC system enables Unattended Train Operations (UTO), allowing full automation of tasks like opening and closing of doors, stoppage, and movement of trains.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Integration

For the first time, the Bengaluru Metro will be using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to monitor the tracks for safety purposes. AI algorithms will analyze data from sensors to detect anomalies like cracks, wear and tear, or other irregularities along the track. Cameras mounted on trains will capture visual data, and AI-powered systems will analyze it in real-time to detect safety concerns.

Special Features

The driverless metro trains will have several special features, including:

  • Hot axle detection system to detect overheating in train bearings
  • Real-time location displays with dynamic route maps
  • Front and rear-view cameras for monitoring passengers boarding and deboarding
  • Emergency Egress Device (EED) unit for passenger safety during emergencies

Manufacturer and Partners

The driverless metro coaches are manufactured by the Chinese firm CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co Ltd, in partnership with the Indian company Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. as part of the Make In India Initiative.

Expected Launch

The driverless Yellow Line is currently undergoing various safety tests and is expected to begin operations in the near future, connecting Bengaluru’s tech hub with the city’s southern regions and decongesting traffic on the Hosur Road.
