Bhaderwah Rajma & Ramban Sulai Honey Of Jammu And Kashmir Get GI Tag

In a significant development for the region, Bhaderwah Rajmash and Sulai honey, both hailing from the picturesque districts of Doda and Ramban in Jammu and Kashmir, have been granted coveted Geographical Indication (GI) tags. These tags serve as a testament to the unique qualities and characteristics of these local specialties and open up doors for their promotion and recognition on an international scale.

Bhaderwah Rajmash: The Pride of Chenab Valley

Bhaderwah Rajmash, often referred to as red beans holds a special place in the hearts and palates of those in the Chenab Valley. With its distinct flavor and texture, this legume is not only a staple food item but also a cultural symbol of the region.

Sulai Honey: A Sweet Success Story

The second GI tag is bestowed upon the honey produced in Sulai, located in Ramban district. This Sulai honey has gained recognition not only for its exquisite taste but also for its organic nature. In fact, in 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented organic Sulai honey to Queen Elizabeth during his visit to Britain, showcasing the region’s natural bounty to the world.

The Significance of GI Tags

A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a prestigious label that designates a specific geographic region or country of origin for a product. The primary feature of a GI tag is its uniqueness, which safeguards against any form of third-party misuse. These tags serve as a form of intellectual property right that identifies goods originating from a particular geographical location and possessing distinct qualities and characteristics linked to that region.

Protecting and Promoting Unique Treasures

With these GI tags in place, only authorized users have the rights to use the geographical indication in relation to Bhaderwah Rajmash and Sulai honey. This protection ensures that the products maintain their authenticity and reputation, and it safeguards the interests of the local communities involved in their production.
