Bhagat Singh, a Freedom Fighter

Bhagat Singh, born on 27 September 1907 was a key figure in India’s anti-colonial struggle. In 1928, he mistakenly killed British officer John Saunders, seeking revenge for nationalist leader Lala Lajpat Rai’s death. After a symbolic bombing of the Central Legislative Assembly in 1929, Singh gained widespread sympathy, especially during a hunger strike for better prison conditions. Executed at 23, he became a folk hero and symbol of resistance, admired across India’s political spectrum as Shaheed-e-Azam (“Great martyr”).
