Significance of Birsa Munda Jayanti 2025

The year 2025 marks the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda. To honour this historic occasion, the government has been observing Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh, a year-long celebration of tribal heritage. From November 1 to 15, a special Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada is being held, which includes cultural events, exhibitions, and community programmes.

A major national event is planned in Dediapada, Gujarat, where the Prime Minister will take part in the celebrations.

Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas

November 15 has officially been declared Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas to honour the contribution of tribal freedom fighters. The aim is to bring tribal stories and achievements into national focus. Schools, colleges, museums, and cultural centres across India organize events, festivals, and exhibitions to showcase tribal traditions, art forms, and history. This day highlights the pride, identity, and knowledge of India’s tribal communities.

Government Efforts for Tribal Development

Several important schemes and initiatives are being highlighted during the 2025 celebrations. These focus on improving living conditions, education, healthcare, and employment opportunities in tribal areas.

PM-JANMAN Abhiyan

This programme supports Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). Activities include providing houses, launching mobile health units, and improving basic services in remote villages.

DAJGUA Scheme

The Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan aims to improve facilities, create jobs, and offer skill training in thousands of tribal villages. It helps families become self-reliant and reduces migration.

Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojana

Gujarat has extended this major scheme with a huge investment to support education, livelihood, and overall development of tribal communities.

Special Releases

On the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary, the government will release a commemorative coin and postal stamp in honour of Birsa Munda.

Birsa Munda and the Ulgulan Movement

Birsa Munda is best known for leading the Ulgulan, a strong uprising against British rule. He fought against the unfair laws that took away tribal lands and restricted their forest rights.

The movement began in the Chotanagpur region and demanded self-rule and protection of tribal land systems.

His efforts led to the creation of the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act (1908), a law that still protects tribal land rights today.

Cultural Events Across India

As part of the celebrations, many events are being organized to spread awareness about tribal history and culture.

Janjatiya Gaurav Yatra

A large cultural yatra in Gujarat is travelling through many tribal districts, showcasing tribal dances, crafts, and welfare schemes.

Educational Activities

Eklavya Schools and Tribal Research Institutes are holding essay competitions, art contests, storytelling sessions, and cultural programmes related to tribal heroes.

Community Programmes

Sports meets, tribal fairs, and craft exhibitions are being held in different states, including Sikkim and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Memorials and Projects in Honour of Birsa Munda

The government is developing many institutions and spaces to keep Birsa Munda’s legacy alive.

  • Museums and Research Centres: New Tribal Freedom Fighter Museums and Tribal Research Institutes are being built to preserve tribal history and educate future generations.
  • Birsa Munda Gaurav Upvans: Special green spaces and commemorative groves are planned in tribal regions to honour Birsa Munda and promote ecological conservation.
