The 2025 celebration is very special as it marks his 150th birth anniversary. On this day, people remember his fight to protect tribal land, culture, and rights. Across India, cultural programmes, exhibitions, and community events are organised to celebrate tribal heritage and inspire younger generations.
The year 2025 marks the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda. To honour this historic occasion, the government has been observing Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh, a year-long celebration of tribal heritage. From November 1 to 15, a special Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada is being held, which includes cultural events, exhibitions, and community programmes.
A major national event is planned in Dediapada, Gujarat, where the Prime Minister will take part in the celebrations.
November 15 has officially been declared Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas to honour the contribution of tribal freedom fighters. The aim is to bring tribal stories and achievements into national focus. Schools, colleges, museums, and cultural centres across India organize events, festivals, and exhibitions to showcase tribal traditions, art forms, and history. This day highlights the pride, identity, and knowledge of India’s tribal communities.
Several important schemes and initiatives are being highlighted during the 2025 celebrations. These focus on improving living conditions, education, healthcare, and employment opportunities in tribal areas.
This programme supports Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). Activities include providing houses, launching mobile health units, and improving basic services in remote villages.
The Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan aims to improve facilities, create jobs, and offer skill training in thousands of tribal villages. It helps families become self-reliant and reduces migration.
Gujarat has extended this major scheme with a huge investment to support education, livelihood, and overall development of tribal communities.
On the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary, the government will release a commemorative coin and postal stamp in honour of Birsa Munda.
Birsa Munda is best known for leading the Ulgulan, a strong uprising against British rule. He fought against the unfair laws that took away tribal lands and restricted their forest rights.
The movement began in the Chotanagpur region and demanded self-rule and protection of tribal land systems.
His efforts led to the creation of the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act (1908), a law that still protects tribal land rights today.
