BPCL Inaugurates Floating Solar Power Plant at Kochi Refinery

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has taken a significant step toward sustainable energy with the inauguration of its floating solar power plant at the Kochi Refinery. The project was formally inaugurated by Chief Secretary Sarada Muraleedharan on Friday, March 22, 2025. This marks a major milestone in BPCL’s efforts to integrate renewable energy sources into its operations.

Key Features of the Floating Solar Power Plant

The newly inaugurated floating solar power plant has several distinctive features:

  • Capacity: The plant has an installed capacity of 3.2 MW AC.
  • Location: It has been constructed on the rainwater harvesting pond within the Kochi Refinery premises.
  • Coverage Area: The plant occupies 8 acres of the 19-acre waterbody.
  • Investment: BPCL has invested approximately ₹28.93 crore in this green energy initiative.

Significance of the Floating Solar Project

Environmental Benefits

Floating solar plants offer several advantages over conventional solar power installations, such as:

  • Efficient Land Use: By utilizing a waterbody, the project conserves valuable land resources.
  • Improved Efficiency: The cooling effect of water increases the efficiency of the solar panels.
  • Reduced Water Evaporation: The plant minimizes water loss due to evaporation, making it a dual-purpose initiative.
  • Reduced Carbon Footprint: By generating clean energy, BPCL significantly reduces its reliance on fossil fuels and cuts down carbon emissions.

Economic and Industrial Impact

  • The project is expected to enhance BPCL’s renewable energy capacity, supporting its goal of sustainability.
  • It will contribute to reducing energy costs and dependence on conventional power sources.
  • This initiative aligns with India’s commitment to increasing renewable energy capacity under its climate action policies.

Chief Secretary’s Visit to Bio-Gas Plant

In addition to inaugurating the floating solar plant, Chief Secretary Sarada Muraleedharan also inspected the ongoing work at BPCL’s 150 TPD Municipal Solid Waste to Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plant near the Brahmapuram waste dumping yard. This project aims to:

  • Convert municipal solid waste into compressed bio-gas.
  • Provide an eco-friendly solution to waste management.
  • Strengthen BPCL’s commitment to green energy and waste-to-energy solutions.
