C-DOT and Synergy Quantum Partner to Develop Quantum Key Distribution for Drones

In a major stride towards self-reliance in advanced telecom security, the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) has partnered with Synergy Quantum India to develop Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technologies specifically optimized for drone-based systems. This collaboration aims to strengthen India’s capabilities in quantum-secure communications under the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Why in News?

The news is significant as it marks India’s entry into developing drone-based QKD technology, combining the strengths of public R&D and private innovation. The MoU signed on May 12, 2025, paves the way for next-generation secure communication systems, especially in critical areas like defence, emergency response, and government infrastructure.

Objectives of the MoU

  • To develop drone-based QKD systems using the BB84 protocol with polarization encoding.
  • To achieve Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 or above.
  • To enable quantum-safe communication over airborne platforms.
  • To promote indigenous R&D under the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.

Collaboration Highlights

  • The partnership was signed between C-DOT, a top telecom R&D body under the Department of Telecommunications, and Synergy Quantum India, a leading deep-tech quantum firm.
  • Joint research and proposal development for national and international grants.
  • Co-hosting of seminars, conferences, symposia, and expert talks on quantum communication.
  • Dissemination of research through white papers and scholarly publications.

Significance

  • Enhances India’s position in the global race for quantum-secure communication.
  • Drone-based QKD will enable secure, mobile communication infrastructure.
  • Facilitates real-time encrypted data transmission, crucial for defence and critical services.
  • Strengthens India’s research ecosystem in emerging technologies.

About Quantum Key Distribution (QKD)

  • QKD is a method for secure communication that uses quantum mechanics to distribute encryption keys.
  • The BB84 protocol, developed in 1984, is a foundational QKD protocol known for its security against eavesdropping.
  • When implemented using drones, QKD systems can provide flexible and scalable secure links across distances.
