Cabinet Approves 78-Day Productivity Linked Bonus for Railway Employees

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a ₹2,028.57 crore Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) for 11.72 lakh railway employees, recognizing their exceptional performance in the 2023-24 financial year. Each eligible employee will receive a maximum bonus of ₹17,951, typically disbursed ahead of the Durga Puja and Dussehra holidays. This initiative aims to motivate staff across various categories, including track maintainers, loco pilots, and station masters, by incentivizing continuous improvements in operational efficiency and service delivery.

Performance Recognition

The PLB reflects the significant achievements of the Indian Railways during the financial year, including transporting 1,588 million tonnes of cargo and approximately 6.7 billion passengers. Government investments in infrastructure, operational efficiency, and technology advancements have contributed to these record performances.

Union Concerns

Despite the bonus announcement, several railway unions expressed dissatisfaction, advocating for bonuses based on the Seventh Pay Commission recommendations rather than the outdated Sixth Pay Commission. Union leaders argue that the current bonus structure does not accurately reflect the updated pay scales and the increased demands placed on railway staff, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ongoing Advocacy

The Indian Railway Employees Federation (IREF) and other unions have launched social media campaigns to press the government for a revised bonus structure that aligns with the new pay scales. They emphasize the need for a more equitable approach to compensation that recognizes the contributions of frontline workers in challenging conditions.
