Cabinet Green Signal For The Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2

The Union Cabinet has approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, giving the green light to Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug). These corridors aim to enhance city-wide metro connectivity, reduce road congestion, and promote green, affordable, and efficient travel options for lakhs of Pune residents.

What Is Pune Metro Line 4 and 4A?

Line 4 and Line 4A are part of the second phase of Pune Metro’s expansion,

  • Line 4 will run from Kharadi to Khadakwasla, passing through key zones like Hadapsar and Swargate.
  • Line 4A is a spur route connecting Nal Stop to Warje and Manik Baug.
  • These corridors will be entirely elevated, covering 31.636 km and housing 28 stations. The design ensures smooth integration with Pune’s existing and upcoming metro routes.

Why This Expansion Matters

This development is a core part of Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) and is strategically planned to,

  • Connect major hubs: The metro will serve IT parks in Kharadi, industrial zones in Hadapsar, commercial centers near Swargate, and tourist or residential areas in Khadakwasla and Warje.
  • Ease congestion on busy roads like Sinhagad Road, Magarpatta Road, Solapur Road, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway.
  • Promote multi-modal travel by linking with Hadapsar Railway Station and future extensions towards Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road.
  • Enhance safety and air quality by shifting commuters from roads to rail.

Key Implementation Details

  • The project is expected to be completed in five years.
  • The total estimated cost is ₹9,857.85 crore.
  • It will be jointly funded by the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, and international funding agencies.
  • The project will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro).

The corridors will feature driverless metro trains using advanced communication-based train control (CBTC) systems to enhance punctuality and reduce manual errors.

Metro Ridership Projections

The anticipated daily ridership highlights the long-term impact of this project,

  • 2028: 4.09 lakh
  • 2038: 6.98 lakh
  • 2048: 9.63 lakh
  • 2058: 11.74 lakh

Individually,

  • Kharadi–Khadakwasla (Line 4): 3.23 lakh (2028) → 9.33 lakh (2058)
  • Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug (Line 4A): 85,555 (2028) → 2.41 lakh (2058)

These numbers reflect the critical role these metro lines will play in transforming Pune’s urban commute.

Significance for Pune’s Urban Future

This approval is more than infrastructure — it’s a vision for smart urban growth. As Pune grows, a well-integrated public transport network becomes essential to managing population density, pollution, and commute delays. Metro Lines 4 and 4A are designed to,

  • Reduce travel time for lakhs of residents.
  • Lower dependence on private vehicles, helping reduce emissions.
  • Support inclusive growth by connecting underserved and expanding regions.
  • Improve road safety through a shift from high-risk two-wheeler use to rail transit.

With this expansion, Pune Metro will cross the 100 km network milestone, a clear indicator of progress toward becoming a fully integrated and modern metro city.
