CCS Full Form, Know About Its Role, Structure and Functions

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) is one of the most important decision-making bodies of the Government of India. It takes care of matters related to the country’s safety and security. This committee makes final decisions on defense policies, key appointments in security forces and big security-related expenses.

Full Form of CCS

The full form of CCS is Cabinet Committee on Security. It is a top-level committee of the Indian government that takes final decisions on national security, defense and related matters. It includes the Prime Minister and key ministers, and helps keep the country safe from both internal and external threats.

Role of the Cabinet Committee on Security

The CCS talks about and decides on many important topics related to India’s national security. It looks under defense planning, law and order, internal security and how to deal with threats. It also discusses deals with other countries that affect India’s safety.

Members of the ICS

The Cabinet Committee on Security has five main members:

  • The Prime Minister
  • The Minister of Defense
  • The Minister of Home Affairs
  • The Minister of Finance & Corporate Affairs
  • The Minister of External Affairs

These leaders come together to make top-level decisions for the country’s safety.

Main Functions of the CCS

  • Defense-Related Decisions: The CCS approves big defense purchases. For example, in January 2021, it cleared the purchase of Tejas Mark 1A fighter aircraft from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
  • Law and Order: The committee discusses ways to improve internal security and handle law and order issues.
  • International Security Deals: It talks about agreements with other countries that could affect India’s safety.
  • Political Security Matters: Any political issue linked to national security is also handled by the CCS.
  • Improving Security Forces: The committee looks at the current structure of the security system and brings changes to make it better.
  • Large Defense Expenses: Any defense-related spending above Rs.1000 crore has to be approved by the CCS. This includes expenses under the Department of Defense and the Department of Defense Research and Department.
  • Atomic Energy Matters: The CCS also looks into important decisions related to atomic energy, which is closely tied to national security.
