Centre Issues Gazette Naming Amaravati as Andhra Pradesh Capital
Government of India has officially declared the Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh through the Gazette notification. This gazette notification was issued on 6th of April 2026. The decision brings the clarity to the state capital status and fulfills the long-standing demand of the people. Honorable Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu hailed the new move as the major victory for the state.
This notification comes under the amended provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014.
Key Changes in the Amendment Are,
The notification clarifies that Amaravati includes the regions notified under the APCRDA Act, 2014.
This will ensures the legal clarity on the capital region boundaries and the continuity in planned infrastructure development.
It will also strengthening the urban governance in the region.
In 2014 after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh Hyderabad served as the common capital for both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. And this arrangement was meant to last for up to the 10 years.
As per the law Hyderabad would be eventually to become the exclusive capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have to establish its own capital. With this move it fulfill the long-pending requirement.
The idea of City of Amaravati as the capital was first strongly pushed by N. Chandrababu Naidu during his earlier tenure as Chief Minister of State in (2014-2019).
Various developments include the planning of the modern greenfield capital city. Also to investment in infrastructure and administrative buildings. And the single strategic location along the Krishna River banks.
The government has already started to significant changes in the administrative and infrastructure measures to establish the Amaravati as fully functional capital.
The capital issue of the state has been seen as the major political changes over the years.
Under the Previous Model (Three Capitals Plan) and This plan was Introduced by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy who was the then Chief Minister form (2019-2024).
