Chaiti Chhath Puja is a four-day Hindu festival dedicated to the worship of the Sun God (Surya Dev) and Chhathi Maiya. It is mainly celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh with great devotion. This festival falls in the Hindu month of Chaitra and is considered very sacred. Devotees believe that offering prayers and following the rituals with a pure heart can fulfill all their wishes.
As Chaiti Chhath Puja 2025 approaches, let’s learn about its start and end dates, along with the schedule of important rituals like Nahay Khay, Kharna, Sandhya Arghya and Usha Arghya.
Chaiti Chhath Puja 2025 began on 1st April 2025 (Saturday) and end on 4th April 2025 (Tuesday). This four-day festival is dedicated to Sun God and Chhathi Maiya. Devotees observe strict fasting and offer prayers during Nahay Khay, Kharna, Sandhya Arghya and Usha Arghya to seek blessings for happiness and prosperity.
Chaiti Chhath Puja 2025 is a four-day festival with special rituals. It includes Nahay Khay, Kharna, Sandhya Arghya and Usha Arghya, where devotees worship the Sun God with deep devotion.
The first day is called Nahay Khay. On this day, devotees take a holy bath in rivers or ponds to purify themselves. After the bath, they prepare and eat pure food like pumpkin curry, chickpea lentils and rice. This marks the beginning of their fast and helps them prepare for the upcoming days of strict rituals.
The second day is known as Kharna. Devotees observe a strict fast without even drinking water. In the evening, they break their fast after worshipping the Sun God. They eat a special prasad made of jaggery-based kheer, roti and fruits. After this meal, they begin a 36-hour waterless fast, showing their deep devotion and discipline.
The third day is the most important day of Chhath Puja. In the evening, devotees gather at the banks of rivers or ponds to offer Sandhya Arghya (evening prayers) to the setting Sun. The offerings include fruits, flowers, thekua (a traditional sweet) and other sacred items. This ritual is performed with deep faith and gratitude towards the Sun God.
On the final day, devotees wake up early to offer Usha Arghya (morning prayers) to the rising Sun. After this, they distribute prasad and break their fast, marking the completion of Chaiti Chhath Puja. This day is full of happiness as devotees celebrate the successful completion of their prayers and fasting.
Chaiti Chhath Puja has been celebrated since ancient times. According to legends, this festival is mentioned in the Vedic period when sages worshipped the Sun God for energy and good health. It is also connected to the Mahabharata, where Draupadi, the Pandavas and King Karna were known to worship Surya Dev.
Although Kartik Chhath (celebrated in October-November) is more popular, Chaiti Chhath is equally important for devotees who worship the Sun God throughout the year. This festival is unique because no priest is required, and every devotee performs the rituals on their own with complete dedication. It is also believed to purify the body and soul, promoting spiritual growth and good health.
Chaiti Chhath Puja is a festival of faith, discipline and devotion. People celebrate it with sincerity, seeking blessings for happiness, prosperity and well-being.
