Chile becomes 95th member of International Solar Alliance ISA

Chile has recently become the 95th member of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), a significant development in the global effort to promote solar energy. During a meeting in New Delhi, Ambassador Juan Angulo of Chile handed over the Instrument of ISA ratification to Abhishek Singh, Joint Secretary (Economic Diplomacy) in the Ministry of External Affairs, reinforcing the country’s commitment to solar energy cooperation.

Chile’s inclusion marks a significant step towards achieving global sustainability and addressing energy challenges. ISA’s ‘Towards 1000’ strategy outlines ambitious targets that, if achieved, will substantially advance the use of solar energy, ensure energy access for millions, and significantly reduce carbon emissions. As ISA continues to grow, its collective efforts promise a brighter and more sustainable future for all member countries and the world.

What is the International Solar Alliance (ISA)?

The International Solar Alliance is an action-oriented, member-driven, collaborative platform aimed at promoting the increased deployment of solar energy technologies. It serves as a means to provide energy access, ensure energy security, and drive the global energy transition within its member countries.

Genesis of ISA

ISA was initially conceived as a joint effort by India and France, with its conceptualization taking place during the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) in 2015. It has since evolved to include a broader membership base.

Expanding Membership

With the Framework Agreement of ISA being amended in 2020, all United Nations member states became eligible to join the alliance. This has led to a growing community of nations committed to solar energy cooperation.

Current Membership

Currently, there are 116 countries that have signed up as signatories to the ISA, with 94 having successfully completed the necessary ratification to become full-fledged members.

The ‘Towards 1000’ Strategy

ISA is guided by its ‘Towards 1000’ strategy, which encompasses ambitious goals for the coming decade. The primary objectives of this strategy are:

Mobilizing Investments: The ISA aims to mobilize USD 1,000 billion of investments in solar energy solutions by 2030. This substantial investment will contribute to the growth of the solar energy sector.

Energy Access: The alliance seeks to deliver energy access to 1,000 million people using clean energy solutions, which will play a crucial role in addressing energy poverty and improving livelihoods.

Solar Energy Capacity: ISA’s strategy aims to facilitate the installation of 1,000 gigawatts (GW) of solar energy capacity. This substantial capacity expansion will substantially increase the use of clean energy sources.

Emissions Reduction: The achievement of these goals would also result in the mitigation of global solar emissions to the tune of 1,000 million tonnes of CO2 every year. This is a significant contribution to global efforts to combat climate change.
