Firstly the force began with three battalions and around 2,800 personnel, focusing mainly on protecting central government industrial units.

Over the decades the CISF Raising Day commemorates the remarkable growth of the organization.

Now they have more than a personnel strength of around 1,88,000 members.

The force is headed by a Director General (DG) usually an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and he his supported by senior officers including Additional Director Generals.
