Commonwealth Games 2026: Gulveer Singh and Harjinder Kaur Win Silver medals
The Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow continued to bring success for India as athletes delivered impressive performances across athletics, weightlifting, and boxing. Distance runner Gulveer Singh scripted history by becoming the first Indian athlete to win a medal in the men’s 10,000-metre event at the Commonwealth Games. Meanwhile, Harjinder Kaur secured a silver medal in weightlifting, and four Indian boxers guaranteed themselves at least bronze medals by reaching the semifinals.
Asian champion Gulveer Singh etched his name into Indian athletics history after winning the silver medal in the men’s 10,000-metre race.
Competing at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Gulveer clocked an impressive 27:49.78 to finish second behind Australia’s Ky Robinson, who claimed the gold medal.
This remarkable achievement marks the first-ever Commonwealth Games medal by an Indian in the men’s 10,000m event, highlighting India’s growing strength in long-distance running.
India’s experienced weightlifter Harjinder Kaur added another medal to the country’s tally by winning silver in the women’s 69kg weightlifting event.
The 29-year-old lifted a combined 227 kg to finish second on the podium. This marks her second consecutive Commonwealth Games medal, having won bronze at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022.
Her silver medal also ensured India’s impressive performance in weightlifting, with the country securing seven medals from eight weightlifting events at the Games.
With Gulveer Singh’s and Harjinder Kaur’s silver medals, India’s overall medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 increased to 12 medals.
India also enjoyed an excellent day in boxing, where four pugilists advanced to the semifinals, guaranteeing themselves at least bronze medals.
All four Indian boxers will now compete in the semifinals, aiming to upgrade their medals to silver or gold.
