Countries with Fifth-Generation Fighter Jets in 2026: Where Does India Stand in the Global Stealth Airpower Race?
As the Fifth-generation fighter jets represent the pinnacle of the modern military aviation. It is designed with the advanced stealth technology, powerful sensors, artificial intelligence-assisted systems, and network-centric warfare capabilities, these aircraft have transformed the aerial combat in the 21st century.
As the geopolitical tensions are rising and nations trying to modernize their air forces, possession of the fifth-generation fighters has become the symbol of military and technological superiority.
In the year 2026, only a select group of the countries operate these highly advanced aircraft while several others countries are racing to develop their own next-generation platforms.
So, which countries currently possess the fifth-generation fighter jets and where does India stand in this global competition?
Although there is no universally accepted definition of the 5th Gen Fighter Jet but the defense experts generally agrees that the fifth-generation fighter aircraft share several key characteristics.
These include low radar visibility (stealth), the ability to cruise at the supersonic speeds without afterburners, advanced sensor fusion, internal weapons bays, and seamless data-sharing capabilities with the other aircraft, naval vessels and ground-based command systems.
These features also allow the pilots to detect threats earlier, remain hidden from the enemy radar and dominate the battlefield with the superior situational awareness.
The United States remains as the world’s dominant fifth-generation airpower. It operates the two stealth fighter platforms and they are the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Lightning II.
The F-22, introduced in the year 2005 and it is remains as one of the most capable air-superiority fighters ever built.
Meanwhile, the F-35 program has become the largest fighter aircraft program in the history with more than 1,300 aircraft delivered worldwide.
With hundreds of the aircrafts are operational F-22s and F-35s across the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps, America continues to hold the significant lead over all competitors.
China has emerged as the second-largest operator of the fifth-generation fighters. Its indigenous stealth aircraft which is the J-20 Mighty Dragon, has become the backbone of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force.
The country has also introduced the aircraft variants like J-35 and J-35A and it making China as the only nation besides the United States to field two distinct fifth-generation fighter designs.
With over 300 J-20 fighters already operational and the production continuing at a rapid pace and it is steadily expanding the its stealth fleet and narrowing the gap with the United States.
Russia operates the Su-57 Felon and it is the only fifth-generation fighter aircraft.
Despite the its ambitious plans, production has remained relatively slow due to the economic challenges and pressures on the defense industry.
By the year 2026, Russia is estimated to have only a small fleet of the operational Su-57 aircraft.
While this aircraft possesses stealth features and advanced avionics, many analysts consider it less mature than the its American and Chinese counterparts.
Apart from the United States, the F-35 has become the preferred fifth-generation fighter for the many allied nations.
The United Kingdom operates the F-35B variant and it is capable of of short takeoff and vertical landing operations.
These aircraft serve aboard the Royal Navy’s aircraft carriers and it also strengthen the Britain’s expeditionary capabilities.
Italy operates both the F-35A and F-35B variants and it hosts one of the world’s few F-35 assembly facilities. The aircraft plays the crucial role in both the Italian Air Force and Navy.
Australia has completed the its transition to the F-35A and making the Royal Australian Air Force one of the most technologically advanced forces in the Indo-Pacific region.
Japan has one of the largest planned F-35 fleets outside the United States. This aircraft forms the critical component of the Japan’s defense strategy amid growing regional security concerns.
South Korea operates the F-35A and it continues to expand the its stealth capabilities while simultaneously developing the indigenous KF-21 fighter program.
Israel’s customized F-35I “Adir” incorporates the unique domestic technologies and it has already been used extensively in many operational missions.
There are several European nations now operate or are receiving F-35 aircraft which includes the,
These acquisitions are significantly strengthening the NATO’s collective airpower and its interoperability.
The United States remains as the clear leader with the world’s largest fleet of the fifth-generation aircraft.
The combined inventory of the F-22 Raptors and F-35 Lightning IIs numbers in the hundreds and it is far exceeding with any other nation.
China ranks second in this category and it continues to expand the its J-20 fleet at an impressive pace.
Despite the operating one of the world’s largest air forces India does not yet possess the operational fifth-generation fighter aircraft.
The Indian Air Force currently relies on to the advanced fourth-generation and 4.5-generation platforms such as the Sukhoi Su-30MKI, Dassault Rafale, Mirage 2000 and HAL Tejas.
However, India is actively pursuing the its own indigenous fifth-generation fighter program which is known as the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is the India’s ambitious stealth fighter project which is developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
The aircraft is expected to feature the,
