India will celebrate its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, with the theme “Yuva Shakti: Leading the journey to Viksit Bharat@2047.” The theme highlights the role of young Indians in achieving the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047. The celebrations at the Red Fort will also commemorate 150 years of Vande Mataram, with the National Song scheduled to be sung from the Red Fort ramparts for the first time. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the celebrations and address the nation. Around 5,000 special guests are expected, including 19 medal-winning students from the 2026 International Olympiads. Around 2,500 NCC cadets and MY Bharat volunteers will also participate in the celebrations.
India’s 80th Independence Day ceremony on August 15, 2026, will feature Vande Mataram in the Red Fort programme for the first time. According to the Ministry of Defence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive at the Red Fort ramparts, after which Vande Mataram will be played while attendees stand. The Prime Minister will then unfurl the National Flag, followed by the National Anthem. Written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Vande Mataram is India’s National Song and has a significant association with the freedom movement. The 2026 celebrations will also focus on ‘Yuva Shakti’, highlighting young Indians and their contributions to education, innovation, technology, entrepreneurship, sports and nation-building. The Leader of the Opposition has also been invited to attend the ceremony.
India’s Asiatic lion population has increased from 523 in 2015 to 891 in 2025, marking a rise of 368 lions, or nearly 70%, over a decade. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav highlighted the achievement on World Lion Day 2026, crediting forest officials, conservationists and local communities. The government has expanded lion habitats and strengthened scientific monitoring, veterinary care and habitat management under Project Lion, launched in 2020 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The initiative focuses on disease surveillance, technology-based conservation, biodiversity protection, community participation and benefit sharing. The lion range has expanded from about 30,000 sq km in 2020 to nearly 35,000 sq km, supporting wider habitat connectivity and conservation.
Tripura has achieved a major agricultural export milestone with its first-ever shipment of mustard honey to Dubai. The 1-metric-tonne consignment was exported by Dergang Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) with facilitation from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). The initiative opens an international market for Tripura’s beekeepers and farmers while demonstrating the potential of organised farmer collectives. Private company Salt Range Foods Pvt. Ltd. supported Dergang FPO in strengthening bee production and developing an export-oriented supply chain. The shipment is expected to encourage quality-focused production, better market access and improved price realisation. Tripura Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath highlighted the achievement and the state’s focus on apiculture and organic agriculture.
India has identified 45 major Invasive Alien Plant Species (IAPS) through the Forest Survey of India (FSI) to strengthen forest ecosystem management. The issue was highlighted in a Lok Sabha reply on August 10, 2026. These invasive plants can spread beyond their natural range and compete with native vegetation for water, nutrients, sunlight and space, affecting biodiversity and ecological processes. The Botanical Survey of India (BSI) has also prepared a state-wise inventory covering forest and non-forest areas for developing a National Management Plan. State governments and Union Territories are responsible for removal and restoration based on local conditions and approved management plans. The National Working Plan Code 2023 promotes invasive species control, degraded-land restoration and regeneration using indigenous and native species.
The Lok Sabha passed the Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026, on August 10, 2026, proposing an independent National Tribunals Commission (NTC) to oversee tribunal appointments, administration and performance. The five-member Commission will be headquartered in New Delhi and comprise a chairperson, two judicial members and two technical members. The proposed framework is intended to replace the Tribunals Reforms Act, 2021 and address concerns surrounding tribunal independence and administration. The NTC is expected to oversee 16 administrative bodies, including the National Green Tribunal, Securities Appellate Tribunal, Armed Forces Tribunal and Central Administrative Tribunal. The Bill estimates an implementation cost of ₹27.14 crore, including ₹24.79 crore recurring and ₹2.35 crore one-time expenditure. Tribunals function under the constitutional framework of Articles 323A and 323B.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has launched a new scholarship and fellowship payment initiative for agriculture students through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) using Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). At an event at ICAR-IARI, Pusa, more than 6,000 agriculture students received ₹21.35 crore directly into their bank accounts. Under the new system, eligible students will receive scholarship assistance every month, helping reduce payment delays and making fund distribution more transparent and timely. Chouhan also stressed the importance of practical agricultural education, encouraging students to gain field-based experience alongside classroom learning. He urged young people to pursue innovation, startups and research to develop technology-driven solutions for farmers. The initiative aims to strengthen agricultural education while supporting India’s goals of food security, nutrition and improved farmers’ incomes.
The V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port) in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, became India’s first major port to achieve Scope-2 Emission-Free status on August 10, 2026. Independent verification confirmed that renewable energy generation exceeded electricity consumption during the relevant period. Renewable energy met 93.89% of the port’s total electricity consumption in FY 2025–26. The port also became India’s first major port to receive ISO 50001:2018 certification for its Energy Management System. Bureau Veritas recognised the Scope-2 status, while Indian Register Quality Systems awarded the ISO certification. VOC Port currently has 7.04 MW solar and 2 MW wind capacity, with plans for additional solar, 17 MW wind capacity, battery storage and a Green Hydrogen Hub.
The Gujarat Forest Department launched a ₹2.94 crore Plastic Waste Management Project around the Ramsar-designated Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary on August 11, 2026. Linked to the Project for Eco-Restoration in Gujarat, the initiative receives financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It aims to reduce plastic pollution while creating livelihood opportunities by purchasing collected plastic waste from villagers. A dedicated collection centre has been established at Kayla village in Viramgam taluka, covering villages across Ahmedabad and Surendranagar districts. Eco-Development Committees will appoint local Swachhta Praharis for segregation and collection of dry plastic waste. The project combines wetland conservation, structured waste management, community participation and rural livelihood generation.
The Jammu and Kashmir administration approved ₹10 crore on August 9, 2026, for the repair, renovation and restoration of Rattan Garh Fort in Bhaderwah, Doda district. Built in 1733 by Raja Sampat Pal, the historic fort is described as the only surviving structure among seven original bastions that once stood in the Bhaderwah valley. Historical records also indicate that the fort was later used as a prison. The restoration project aims to preserve its architectural integrity and develop it as a heritage and tourism destination in the Chenab Valley. The Chenab Valley comprises Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts and is known for its mountainous terrain, river valleys and cultural heritage, making the fort important for regional tourism.
Karnataka has approached the Supreme Court challenging a Karnataka High Court ruling that allowed motorcycles to be considered for registration as transport vehicles and use as bike taxis. The state has raised concerns over passenger safety, insurance coverage, road congestion, pollution, enforcement and higher risks associated with two-wheelers. The dispute follows the High Court’s January 23, 2026 judgment arising from appeals involving Ola, Uber, Rapido, motorcycle owners and the Bike Taxi Welfare Association. Karnataka argues that the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 does not automatically permit motorcycles to operate as commercial taxis. The state also cited a March 18, 2026 Rajya Sabha response stating that “bike taxi” is not specifically defined under the Act or its rules, intensifying the regulatory debate.
Iran has appointed former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Mohsen Rezaei as the new head of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), replacing Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr. The appointment comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy route, and ongoing indirect diplomacy involving Iran, the United States and Oman. Rezaei is a veteran of Iran’s security establishment and has previously supported advancing the country’s nuclear programme. The SNSC coordinates major national security, defence and foreign-policy matters, with key decisions requiring approval from Iran’s Supreme Leader. His appointment could strengthen the security-oriented voice within Iran’s decision-making structure as diplomatic efforts continue over shipping access through the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional tensions.
India gifted five young peacocks to the United Nations Office at Geneva on August 7, 2026, reviving a tradition dating back to 1981. The flock includes four blue Indian peafowl and one rare white male, all belonging to the species Pavo cristatus, India’s national bird. The handover took place during a ceremony involving India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative Arindam Bagchi and UN Geneva Director-General Tatiana Valovaya. The birds will initially stay in a temporary aviary at Ariana Park for three months before moving freely across the 46-hectare UN Geneva grounds. Geneva Bioparc handled their transportation and medical care. The 1981 tradition began when Indira Gandhi sent a breeding pair from Delhi Zoo.
Parliament has passed the Bankers’ Book Evidence Bill 2026, replacing the Bankers’ Book Evidence Act, 1891, and giving explicit legal recognition to electronic and digital banking records in court proceedings. The Rajya Sabha cleared the Bill by voice vote on August 10, 2026, after its passage in the Lok Sabha. The technology-neutral legislation covers banking records stored in physical, electronic, digital, cloud, backup and disaster-recovery systems. It also allows records to be authenticated using manual, digital or electronic signatures, creating clearer evidentiary procedures. The Bill includes provisions aimed at protecting bank officers from unnecessary court summons when their bank is not directly involved in a case. It contains around 16 clauses and allows the Central Government to extend its provisions to other regulated financial entities through notification.
India’s government debt-to-GDP ratio stood at 58.2% in FY26, exceeding the target of 56.1% by 210 basis points, according to Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary. The Centre has set a lower target of 55.6% for FY27, requiring a further reduction of about 260 basis points. Government liabilities have declined from 61.5% of GDP in FY21 to 58.2% in FY26, while the fiscal deficit fell from 9.2% to 4.4% of GDP over the same period. The higher-than-target debt ratio was partly attributed to a downward revision in nominal GDP following a new national accounts series with FY23 as the base year. The government has also established a ₹1 trillion Economic Stabilisation Fund to manage global economic risks and unforeseen fiscal pressures.
The Reserve Bank of India’s 101st Survey of Professional Forecasters, conducted in July 2026, has raised India’s FY27 real GDP growth forecast from 6.5% to 6.6%. The survey also increased the retail inflation projection from 4.9% to 5%. For FY28, economists expect stronger growth of 7%, while inflation is projected at 4.5%, indicating a possible “Goldilocks” phase of solid growth alongside moderating price pressures. The survey forecasts merchandise export growth at 7%, imports at 9.9% and the current account deficit at 1.4% of GDP. Meanwhile, the RBI’s own FY27 growth projection stands slightly higher at 6.7%. Key risks include food and fuel prices, monsoon conditions, geopolitical tensions, El Niño and global trade uncertainty.
Bengaluru-based Sarla Aviation has received Design Organisation Approval (DOA) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), marking a major step for India’s emerging electric air-taxi industry. The approval, granted on August 8, 2026, supports the company’s development of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for urban mobility. Sarla Aviation became India’s third eVTOL DOA holder in 2026. Its planned aircraft can carry six passengers and one pilot and uses seven electric motors. The company also completed flight testing of its half-scale Sylla technology demonstrator in July 2026. India is targeting operational electric air taxis in cities including Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi by 2028, subject to further testing, certification and infrastructure development.
Dr Srinivasa Kumar Tummala, an eminent oceanographer and distinguished scientist, has assumed charge as Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). He brings more than three decades of experience in remote sensing, satellite oceanography, coastal hazard mitigation and disaster management. Following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, he served as Project Manager for establishing India’s advanced Tsunami Early Warning System at INCOIS, helping strengthen India’s role in regional tsunami preparedness. He later served as Director of ESSO-INCOIS, Hyderabad, where ocean information services including fishing advisories, coral reef alerts and multi-hazard vulnerability mapping were expanded. Tummala also headed the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System Secretariat under UNESCO-IOC in Perth. He has received the National Geoscience Award (2010) and Indian National Geospatial Award (2008) for his contributions.
Deepti Gaur Mukerjee, a 1993-batch Madhya Pradesh cadre IAS officer, was appointed Secretary of the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education on August 10, 2026. The appointment was part of a senior bureaucratic reshuffle issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Mukerjee replaced Vineet Joshi, who was moved to the Ministry of Panchayati Raj in July. She had previously served as Secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs since August 16, 2024. The Department of Higher Education handles universities, colleges, technical education and central higher education policy. Other appointments in the reshuffle included Pallavi Jain Govil as Corporate Affairs Secretary and Sunil Paliwal as Youth Affairs Secretary.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Institute of Data Engineering, Analytics and Science Foundation (IDEAS), Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata, to strengthen data-driven policymaking and statistical research. The collaboration will focus on two key projects. IDEAS will develop a desktop-based GDP nowcasting tool to provide timely insights into current economic conditions using available high-frequency data. The second project will create a harmonised indicator framework linking administrative data from government health, nutrition and well-being schemes with household-level NSS data. The partnership aims to improve data integration, economic analysis, research capabilities and the timely assessment of policy outcomes and emerging economic trends.
NABARD announced the winners of the National Climate Stack Innovation Challenge on August 10, 2026, organised with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Dalberg Advisors under the Data in Climate Resilient Agriculture (DiCRA) framework. SatSure Analytics India won the first prize of ₹15 lakh for a climate vulnerability index ranking villages by weather-risk exposure. EXPERIQS secured second prize of ₹10 lakh for drought monitoring and crop-cycle impact forecasting, while VARSAPRADAYA won third prize of ₹5 lakh for hazard scoring and irrigation planning. More than 150 applications were received, narrowed to 20 prototype builders and 11 finalists. The initiative promotes digital tools for climate-resilient agriculture and rural credit-risk assessment.
India won one gold and three bronze medals at the 23rd International Linguistics Olympiad 2026 held in Bucharest, Romania. Shrilakshmi Venkatraman won individual gold with a score of 70.0, while Aarav Anil Rao, Nishanth Shankar Lakshmanan and Advay Misra secured bronze medals. Soham Amit Pednekar received an Honourable Mention. The competition featured 255 individual participants from more than 40 countries and tests logic, grammar, language analysis and pattern recognition. India’s cumulative individual medal tally since its first participation in 2009 reached 37 medals, including six gold, nine silver and 22 bronze. Indian participants are selected through the Panini Linguistics Olympiad, with IIIT Hyderabad’s LTRC managing mentorship since 2015.
Indian theoretical physicist Deepak Dhar has been selected for the prestigious 2026 Dirac Medal for his contributions to statistical mechanics and complex systems. The award was announced on August 8, 2026, by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. Dhar shares the honour with Bernard Derrida of France, Marc Mézard of Italy, and Haim Sompolinsky of Israel and the United States. His influential research includes sandpile models and self-organised criticality, with applications extending to optimisation, theoretical neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Established by ICTP in 1985, the Dirac Medal is awarded annually on August 8, the birth anniversary of physicist Paul Dirac, and carries a US$5,000 prize. The award recognises significant contributions to theoretical physics and excludes Nobel, Fields or Wolf Prize winners.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has revived Su-30MKI fighter aircraft production at its Nashik facility in Maharashtra, strengthening India’s domestic defence manufacturing capacity. The revived production line will manufacture 12 new Su-30MKI fighters for the Indian Air Force under an order signed in December 2024 to replace aircraft lost in accidents. The first aircraft is expected to be delivered in 2027–28, with all deliveries planned by 2029. HAL’s Nashik division previously manufactured 222 Su-30MKI aircraft under licence from Russia. The new fighters are expected to include significant indigenous content, estimated at around 50% to 62.6%. Meanwhile, India is preparing a separate ₹60,000-crore modernisation programme for its existing Su-30MKI fleet, covering avionics, indigenous radar, electronic warfare and advanced flight-control systems.
India won an impressive 17 medals on the opening day of the U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2026 in Lagos, Nigeria. The tally included four gold, four silver and nine bronze medals across foil, epee and sabre events. Nikhil Wagh won gold in Men’s Sabre, while Joys Ashita triumphed in Women’s Foil, Prachi Lohan in Women’s Epee and Jeferlin in Women’s Sabre. Other Indian medalists included Lakshay Badser, Tejas Patil, Lokesh Vemani, Kanaglakshmi, Aakhari and several bronze winners. The championship began on August 9 and is scheduled until August 14, 2026. The U-23 competition features athletes below 23 years and all three Olympic fencing weapons: foil, epee and sabre.
