India has unveiled Shabdalok, the country’s first immersive language museum, at the National Library in Kolkata to preserve and showcase its rich linguistic heritage. Shabdalok, meaning “Museum of Words,” traces the evolution of communication from oral traditions to written literature. It highlights nearly 380 Indian languages, including classical, historical, and lesser-used languages, along with various scripts and literary traditions. Spread across nine galleries, the museum combines culture and technology to make language learning interactive. Entry is free until August 15, 2026, encouraging public participation in exploring India’s multilingual heritage.
The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on July 20, 2026, proposing an increase in the apex court’s sanctioned judge strength. The Bill seeks to amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956, raising the number of judges from 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India. After approval, the Supreme Court will have a total strength of 38 judges, including the CJI. The move aims to reduce the court’s backlog of around 92,385 pending cases, improve case disposal, and enhance judicial efficiency. The proposal follows Cabinet approval and an ordinance issued earlier in 2026. Since the amendment involves an ordinary law, it requires only parliamentary approval and presidential assent, not a constitutional amendment.
The Aadhaar App has crossed 4 crore downloads, highlighting the growing adoption of digital identity services under the Digital India Mission. Developed by UIDAI, the app enables users to manage Aadhaar services from their smartphones, including updating addresses, mobile numbers, and email IDs, downloading e-Aadhaar, and locking or unlocking biometrics. So far, users have completed over 11.65 lakh address updates, nearly 49 lakh mobile number updates, around 12.5 lakh email updates, and more than 1.91 crore biometric lock/unlock transactions. To encourage citizens to update their contact details, UIDAI has made email updates free through the app until December 31, 2026. With strong privacy features and paperless access, the app is improving convenience, security, and access to digital government services across India.
India has launched JAL-YAAN, the country’s first solar-powered, self-sustaining water purification van, to improve access to safe drinking water in remote and disaster-affected regions. Developed by CSIR-CSMCRI in collaboration with Rite Water Solutions, the mobile unit can purify water from rivers, ponds, groundwater, and stored sources. Powered by solar panels, it operates independently in off-grid areas and uses advanced treatment technologies, including reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration, to produce potable water. Built for rapid deployment, JAL-YAAN can support disaster relief during floods, cyclones, earthquakes, and droughts while also providing emergency electricity. The initiative strengthens India’s efforts toward renewable energy, climate resilience, and sustainable public health, with applications in rural villages, water-scarce areas, humanitarian missions, temporary settlements, and coastal regions.
The Central Government has granted environmental clearance for the 1,000 MW Naying Hydel Project in Arunachal Pradesh, paving the way for a major renewable energy initiative. Planned on the Siyom River in the Siang and Shi-Yomi districts near the India-China border, the run-of-the-river project will generate electricity using the river’s natural flow with minimal water storage. The approval by the Environment Ministry’s Expert Appraisal Committee follows detailed environmental studies and public consultations. The project is expected to boost India’s clean energy capacity, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and strengthen long-term energy security. Its strategic border location will improve regional infrastructure, support national security objectives, generate employment, enhance transport connectivity, and promote economic development in Arunachal Pradesh’s remote districts.
Amul has launched its ₹700 crore Bengal Dairy Project at Howrah Food Park, which will house the world’s largest curd manufacturing plant and strengthen India’s dairy sector. The facility will process 30 lakh litres of milk daily and produce 10 lakh kg of curd, 10 lakh litres of packaged milk, 2 lakh litres of UHT milk, 1 lakh litres of ice cream, along with paneer, ghee, sweets, and flavoured milk. The project’s first phase will benefit around 1.2 lakh dairy farmers through better market access, stable incomes, and cooperative procurement. It will also create employment across the dairy value chain. Supporting the vision of “White Revolution 2.0,” the Centre announced breed improvement programmes, a sex-sorted semen facility, and new farmer welfare initiatives to boost milk productivity.
APEDA has facilitated the first export shipment of premium Kashmir cherries and plums to Singapore, creating new opportunities for India’s horticulture sector. The consignment included Areko cherries and Scentrose plums sourced from Shopian and Pulwama districts of Jammu & Kashmir. Flagged off on July 16 in collaboration with Osum Food Solutions LLP and Fruit Master Agro Fresh Private Limited, the export marks a major step in expanding global markets for Kashmir fruits. To meet international standards, the produce underwent scientific harvesting, grading, hygienic packaging, cold-chain transportation, and phytosanitary compliance. The initiative is expected to increase farmers’ earnings by over 50%, encourage modern farming practices, reduce post-harvest losses, and strengthen India’s presence in premium fruit markets across Singapore, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai.

The Government of India has appointed senior BJP leader Harjeet Singh Grewal as the new Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) in July 2026. Grewal, known for his decades-long organizational work within the BJP, will lead the statutory body responsible for protecting minority rights and advising the government on welfare policies. Established under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992, the NCM monitors constitutional safeguards, addresses complaints, and promotes social and educational development of minority communities. Grewal becomes the third Sikh and second person from Punjab to head the Commission, receiving the status of a Union Cabinet Minister. A BJP member since 1986, he has held key roles including founder and national president of BJP Kisan Morcha, despite not winning electoral contests.
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has introduced trading in Electronic Gold Receipts (EGRs), a SEBI-regulated initiative that modernizes India’s bullion market. EGRs are securities representing ownership of physical gold stored securely with SEBI-monitored vault managers. Investors can buy, sell, hold, and redeem gold electronically through their demat accounts without storing physical gold themselves. Each EGR corresponds to a specific quantity of standardized, high-purity gold, ensuring transparency and quality. The process involves depositing gold with a registered vault manager, verification, issuance of EGRs in demat form, exchange trading, and optional redemption into physical gold. EGRs offer secure storage, transparent pricing, standardized quality, improved liquidity, and convenient ownership. The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s organized gold market, improve price discovery, reduce reliance on informal trading, and increase investor confidence.
India created history at the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2026 by winning four gold medals, becoming the first country to have all its participants achieve the top honour. Held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from July 10 to 19, the competition featured 363 students from 93 countries. Indian winners included Debadatta Priyadarshi from Odisha, Harshit Singla from Punjab, Kabeer Chillar from Delhi, and Sandeep Kuchi from Telangana. India has approved QDENGA (TAK-003), the country’s first dengue vaccine, marking a major milestone in public health and disease prevention. Cleared by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) on July 20, 2026, the vaccine is approved for people aged 4 to 60 years. Developed by Takeda Biopharmaceuticals, Japan, QDENGA is a live-attenuated tetravalent vaccine that protects against all four dengue virus serotypes—DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4. It can be administered to individuals regardless of previous dengue infection, eliminating the need for pre-vaccination screening. India has commissioned the White Rabbit Technology-based Indian Standard Time (IST) Dissemination Network, strengthening its “One Nation, One Time” initiative and digital infrastructure. Inaugurated by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi at RRSL Bengaluru, the indigenous system was developed by the Department of Consumer Affairs, CSIR–NPL, and ISRO. Using White Rabbit Technology, it delivers UTC (NPLI)-traceable IST with sub-nanosecond accuracy over fibre-optic networks, reducing dependence on foreign timing sources. The network will provide secure and precise time synchronization for banking, financial markets, telecommunications, power grids, transportation, cybersecurity, and digital governance. A successful demonstration between RRSL Bengaluru and the National Stock Exchange in Chennai confirmed its reliability. The project also involves SEBI, NSE, BSNL, and other institutions, enhancing India’s technological self-reliance and secure digital ecosystem.
