Deepika Sehrawat Wins Prestigious Poligras Magic Skill Award
In a historic achievement for Indian sports, Deepika Sehrawat became the first-ever Indian player to win the Poligras Magic Skill Award for her extraordinary solo goal against the Netherlands during the 2024–25 FIH Hockey Pro League. This recognition reflects both her individual brilliance and India’s growing impact in international women’s hockey.
Deepika hails from Hisar, Haryana, and first made headlines at the 2018 Sub-Junior National Championships by scoring 16 goals, earning her the Best Player title. She debuted in the junior national team during the Youth Olympic Qualifiers (2018) and was part of India’s squad in the 2021 Junior Women’s World Cup and the Junior Asia Cup, where India secured gold. She made her senior debut in 2021-22 FIH Pro League.
The Poligras Magic Skill Award is a fan-voted international recognition given by the FIH to the most creative and skilful play in the Pro League season. Deepika’s victory is notable as it marks the first time an Indian—male or female—has won this award, highlighting the rise of Indian women in global hockey.
Deepika scored the award-winning goal during a high-stakes match against world no. 1 Netherlands. Trailing 0-2, she dribbled past multiple defenders, lifted the ball over a stick, and scored a brilliant solo goal. India drew the match 2-2 and eventually won in the shootout, showcasing resilience and talent.
Among nominees like Spain’s Patricia Alvarez and the Australian team, Deepika emerged as the fan favourite. The men’s award was won by Victor Wegnez of Belgium for his midfield brilliance. Deepika’s victory not only boosts her profile but also inspires young Indian athletes, especially in women’s hockey.
