Delhi’s IGIA Becomes 1st Airport In India With Four Runways & An Elevated Cross Taxiway

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) achieved a significant milestone as it became India’s first airport to have four runways. The civil aviation minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, inaugurated the airport’s fourth runway, increasing its throughput capacity from approximately 1400-1500 air traffic movements per day to almost 2000 air traffic movements per day. The addition of the fourth runway will allow the airport to serve more than 109 million passengers annually.

New Terminal and Capacity Expansion

Scindia hinted at the opening of the airport’s new terminal by October this year. The commencement of the fourth terminal is expected to further enhance the airport’s capacity to handle the growing number of passengers. With the new runway and terminal, Delhi Airport will be well-equipped to cater to the rising demand and is set to become a major international hub.

A Historic Day for Indian Civil Aviation

The inauguration of the fourth runway and the first eastern cross taxiway (ECT) marks a historic landmark day for Indian civil aviation. The ECT connects the Northern and Southern parts of the airfield, reducing taxi time for aircraft and facilitating passengers’ deplaning within 12 minutes of landing. This operational efficiency will contribute to a reduction of almost 55,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

Scindia emphasized that the civil aviation sector plays a crucial role in India’s economic growth. The growth in fleet capacity and metro airport passengers reflects the country’s robust aviation industry. With the airport’s expansion and improvements, India is aiming to become a major player in global civil aviation.

Scindia extended congratulations to the GMR Group, the airport’s operator, for its role in achieving these milestones. The ECT, along with the fourth runway and the new integrated Terminal 1, will position Delhi Airport as a future-ready international hub. GMR Group’s Chairman, G M Rao, highlighted how these developments enhance operational efficiency and increase capacity at the airport.
